At first, felt sad about it but then I saw that the kid is eight years old! I'd feel a lot more sympathetic if it happened to a two year old...eight year olds should be developmentally past that kind of thing... "Angry parents want toy pulled from shelves after daughter, 8, swallows 20 steel marbles and 10 magnets from building set" (20 marbles??) http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,361902,00.html Guess if the kid's eating marbles and magnets they need the money for some educational supplementation (or therapy)?
I read that earlier and saw them on TV this morning. I'm sorry, but unless she is "delayed" for some reason, any 8 year old knows better than to eat toys. So now they want to take some pretty cool toys off the market because they didn't teach their kid not to eat toys. :?
And if she is delayed shouldn't her Parents know NOT to buy her these things because she may eat them.
EXACTLY! Her parents didn't OR DONT give her the LOVE OR DISIPLINE she needs. (here I go again). (see frames thread) Why in the sam hill would an 8 year old do that IF they werent looking for attention OR there wasn't some *issues* in the house? Come on!
I saw her on tv this morning and when she was asked why she ate the marbles, she said because they looked like candy.
That's BS!! Any 8 year old (unless they are mentally handicapped) should know the difference between candy and parts of a toy. If she is mentally handicapped, the parents should know what is an appropriate toy for her and what is not. THEY should be responsible for making the choice if that was a safe toy for their kid and maybe supervise their kid a little more since she cannot make safe choices for herself. If she is not a mentally handicapped kid, then her parents should give her the proper punishment/correction for doing something stupid and stop trying to blame the toy company or the stores who sell the toys for their kids choice to try to eat the toy! An 8 year old who thought metal parts of a toy were candy...BS! I'm with Harley, something is definately lacking in this house. Maybe the only safe toys for this kid are books, crayons and coloring books. Oh, wait, she may try to eat the crayons and then the parents can blame Crayola for making the crayons in such bright pretty colors...she thought they were little popcicles... Always someone elses fault.....
I'm just wondering if rocks should be recalled? If the kids will eat magnets, then rocks, marbles & toothpicks could be dangerous also. Gosh, if her parents aren't careful, she could eat the softdrink cap, so those should be recalled also. Wow, pennies, quarters, nickels & dimes .... even foreign coins could be a problem ... so those should be banned also. Sewing needles could cause nasty damage to those who tried to swallow them. Those little rubber bouncy balls could be mistaken for candy & swallowed also ... we should ban those right away. I guess the little plastic containers the bouncy balls come in out of the gumball machine may also be dangerous. Even worse ... because the bouncy balls actually come from a gumball/candy machine ... those could really trick a kid into thinking they were candy. I can just imagine a child eating rubber ball after rubber ball trying to decide if the balls are candy or not? Thumb tacks, screws, washers, small nails all need to go too. My son loves legos ... I guess I should get those out of the house right after I throw out the Mega Magnets. We also have a lot of those Tech Deck skate boards with the little parts ... those are probably dangerous too. Rings & earings could also be an issue if swallowed ... especially those with diamonds ... jewelry should be banned immediately. Glass could break & cut a child ... or worse the child could eat it so we should get rid of all glass right away. These people are crazy. I can't believe anyone took these folks seriously. I REALLY hope these folks aren't going to get any money for this stupidity. I can see it now ... parents dared their daughter to eat magnets in return for money? Did it really take eating multiple magnets for this kid to realize they weren't candy? I know .... the kid was watching a television show where an individual was eating pieces of metal ... there was a warning on the show that told kids "Do Not Try This at Home" ... so the little girl took all the marbles & magnets out into the street so she wouldn't be at home anymore and gobbled them down so she could be like the movie stars on television. Now the parents will be able to sue the toy companies who make marbles & magnets & those responsible for the television show & the makers of the television & the cable company & the store that sold the toys & the store that sold the television & the folks who sold the car that allowed the parents to go to the store & buy the television ... I know this posting is stupid & rambling ... but so is the family in this article. It's terrible that this child injured herself ... but hopefully she learned not to put toys in her mouth anymore. Too bad Mommy and Daddy didn't teach her that years ago. This is about as stupid as parents climing a giant cliff with a two year old and then blaming it on the park when the child falls. Who should be sued next ... God for creating the cliffs? Just because I'm aggravated, I think I may have to write a letter to the Magnetix company to let them know how much my sons has enjoyed their toys ... a letter to Fox News berating them for giving this family any positive attention ... a letter to the Consumer Products Safety Commision pointing out how stupid this case is (Just in case they aren't aware of that already ... and a letter to the whatever paper is local for Huntingburg, Ind about how ridiculous it is for these parents to blem anyone except their daughter & themselves for the kids injuries. I hope the only publicity these folks & others like them is NEGATIVE so others won't pull stupid stunts like this in efforts to make a few bucks.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/06/02/earlyshow/living/parenting/main4144807.shtml http://www.wbir.com/news/health/story.aspx?storyid=58434&catid=3 http://cbs4denver.com/health/magnet.steel.balls.2.738341.html I agreed with the following portion of the above article: " The parts came from a toy called Magnetix, made by Mega Brands, which issued a statement about the incident: ""Mega Brands was saddened to learn that a child sustained injury from ingesting a large number of toy parts, some of which apparently contained magnets. While we have not been able to confirm whether the toy involved was a MEGA Brands product, it is clear this was a highly unusual and isolated situation and is not indicative of any problem with Mega Brands' magnetic construction toys currently on the market. In general, if a child swallows 30 pieces of any toy, it is likely that it will result in harm regardless of the toy in question." http://www.wbirtv10.com/news/health/story.aspx?storyid=58434&catid=3 http://www.theindychannel.com/health/16366961/detail.html If you google this story, you'll see that this family got a ton of publicity ... in return for this childs stupid actions. Too bad the news stations can't use that valuable publicity for better causes. Like others mentioned in their posts ... this kid & her family got what they wanted ... a few minutes of fame. I actually did see other parents arguing that magnets be banned in "dangerous" toys like Magnetix, Polly Pockets & sticky stones. I'm sure everyone of these products has a label with an age limit ... and if a child who is of the age listed on the box is not wise enough to keep the toys out of their mouth ... then it's the parents job to keep the toys away from the kids. Yes ... baby walkers were unsafe if a parent let their kid ride in one at the top of the stairs or unattended. But a lamp is unsafe and a knife is unsafe and a car is unsafe and a tree is unsafe and ....... everything is unsafe without proper supervision. Bikes, skateboards, skates .... all toys that thousands of children are hurt on yearly .... but hopefully no one will be trying to take those away next. Not sure if anyone noticed .... but this type of thing REALLY ANNOYS ME!!!!!
This thread has given me the opportunity to vent about something that has bothered me for a long time - the fact that society no longer is capable of taking responsibility for anything anymore. Whatever happened to the words "I'm sorry" or "that was a mistake"? They are lost and have been replaced by "it's not my fault" and "I'm gonna sue." Responsibily, Karen
Another case of parents being idiots. If she does stuff like this, then why did they PURCHASE them for her? Am I missing something here?
:iagree: even if she did think they were candy by looking at them..... couldn't she tell after the first one that it wasn't????? :withstupid:
