Ok... so when it was initially set up it was not set up as a secured router.

How can that be changed now? or can it?

Your wireless adapters in your desktops, towers, laptops, etc. must have the same settings as your router or they will not be able to communicate.

What space_cowboy posted is a very basic setup with the least amount of security. It's a good start but I would recommend a better encryption protocol than what is on that page, along with other security settings. Most home/personal networks are good with WEP, but that can easily be cracked literally within a couple of minutes with tools freely available on the Internet.

Here is what I have on my network:
    • router name, username, and password changed
    • SSID broadcast turned off
    • MAC filtering enabled - MAC address of each allowed device entered into list
    • WPA Personal-AES encryption w/ auto-generated random 63-character ASCII password

Or access to your files? For a while there my wireless security was down, caught it one day when I noteced somebody elses playlist showed up in my iTunes program. They took a few of my tunes and he (assume) had a pretty healthy porn collection, which I now had access to.

You know I had real concerns regarding the security of my computer, because it overroad my joy to having access to all that porn, and I had to tell my resident IT expert about it. The fear was not only that they would have access to my personal records but possibly also my client files.

One of those cable Internet installer contractors was sitting in his vehicle on the street right in front of my house, right after I got service installed, and he was surfing the web. Couple days later my wife's hard drive took a big dump and all of here files were non-recoverable. I didn't figure that was a coincidence, especially considering the hard drive had just recently been purchased new.

Then I figured out the original contract-installer did a set-it-and-forget-it install with no security. At the time I knew squat about security. That changed real quick.
