Hey guys, I really need some help. My Dad is retired and disabled, but pretty handy with the computer. His has completely gone kuput. He even went as far as to buy a new hard drive, and it's still dead. Dad takes care of my Mom full-time and doesn't really have a lot of other activities in his life. They both suffer from chronic pain, the computer is something that distracts Dad on the nights he can't sleep. And because the government has decided to drag things out as long as possible and not yet approve my Moms SSI, they live on a very tight budget, which includes meds for Mom at almost $500 a month. Here's my point. I need a tower with a working operating system. It doesn't have to be fancy, he's not a big gamer and has just about everything on CD that he would ever need. He can't afford a whole lot, something in the less than $100 range would be great, something cheaper would be better. I know alot of you have pieces of machines laying around and might be able to put something together. He only needs the tower. Let me know if any of you think you might have a decent machine you can sell at a really good price, and thanks!
well, if you're looking for new stuff the only thing i can find is: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2487023&Sku=B450-2105 B its about ~$250 up front, with a $40 rebate, im not sure it comes built, and it doesnt have an O/S. being able to cut out the OS would greatly decrease your cost, but i dont think you're going to be able to go much below 200. if you know any IT people you might be able to get them to toss a copy of windows xp into it for free. they might even put it together for free if they know the situation and are feeling charitably bored.
I'm not looking for a new tower. I'm looking for something that one of you fellas who plays computer guru on the weekends might have laying around that you could build cheaply. Thanks for the link though....
Jennifer, will ask my son tonite if i see him (he's at school till 10pm) if he has a working one. i know we just brought a crapload of computer parts, etc down from VA. Will let ya know - if he does, i know he will just give it to ya for your Dad.
Thanks Kaci. I know he'd be glad to pay for a working tower that he could tinker with, it's just his budget is rather low...
Sorry Jennifer, he said none of the junk he has would work - he said he has already stripped all the parts off of them that are worth anything.
Contact Randy at RoMworks (he used to post on this board, but haven't seen him in a long time). http://www.romworks.biz/ 919-320-6110 Randy takes in used PCs (I gave him mine), refurbises them, and donates them to schools, etc. He may have one lying around that your dad could have.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has tried to help us out. I think we've found Dad a computer!
