I have Office 2003 on my computer. Up until recently it has worked well. Recently I received a document from a customer that I have been working with, and all of a sudden there is a change in how Word turns on and there are "L" shaped images in the upper and lower corners. Evidently my customer is running at a higher/different level and uses something that my version of Office Pro 2003 does not have. When I now activate Word 2003 I first get a message "preparing to install" then I get "please wait while windows configures Microsoft Office Pro Edition 2003. Then I get a message " The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" and "Click OK to try again or enter an alternative path........" I have searched "options" in my version of Word 2003 to see if there was something that I should uncheck, searched the problem on the Microsoft wed site, and called Microsoft where they wanted $49 to address the problem to which I said no thanks. After spending a few moments cancelling these messages Word comes up looking like it originally did except for the those "L" shaped characters in the corners just at the top and bottom of the area that is used to create text in the word document. I have also gone back and retrieved an old Word 2000 document to no avail, the problem is still there. Does anyone know what is going on and how I can eliminate this?
open an office product, go to the help menu. Select repair. If it is not there, go to control panel. Add or remove programs. Select office then the more shortcutt then do a repair. You can also place the media back in and startup will ask if you want to install or repair. Repair.
Thanks, SS. I did something similar to that which you suggested. After researching the issue using Google Search on "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" and after reading numerous other similar situations, I came upon a reference to locating missing .MSI files by Microsoft. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/locate-missing-msi-files-HA001118572.aspx. So I placed my installation disk in the disk drive and pointed to the disk drive to get the missing .MSI file as suggested by the Microsoft file. This solved the problem. My mistake was that I deleted Word 2000 previous to installing Word 2003. If I had not and selected the option leave 2000 on my computer, the problem would not have occurred according to one web site that I viewed. According to this web site or one of the other of the 6 that I climbed through, the problem occurs because Microsoft does not clean the registry upon removal/add. Also it appears it is not only Office 2003 that has the problem, but also higher versions like 2007 and 2010 when they have been upgraded from a previous version. I do not fully understand why I went so long without the problem occurring, except the mention that this problem comes to light sometimes when a feature is added. I did not intentionally add a feature. Maybe my customer's DOC file forced the addition without me realizing it. Anyway the problem is solved. Thanks again.
