Folks, I have a friend in need. Her church rec'd a donated laptop. However, they did not get the recovery disks with it, just the plug in power cord, the case, and the machine. It does boot up, and runs Windows XP Pro. Apparently, in an attempt to ensure that nothing "questionable" was on the church computer, one of their junior computer whizzes deleted some device drivers. Here's the favor I ask. Does anyone know where I could get this system recovered, either by way of system recovery disks for a one time reboot, or for sale? Here's the data: Compaq nc6000, 32 meg graphics card, 14.1 XGA screen, 40 g HD, dvd/CD RW combo, 512memory, running XP Pro. They are a small church, and literally can't afford to pay for any repairs. I was asked to do what I could. I have the machine with me and could meet up with anyone who could help. Thanks in advance... Carl
Here's a link to a Recovery disk set for $29. That will be your cheapest way out. http://www.digitalmedia-labs.com/CompaqRecoveryCD.html
Ken, thanks for the add'l advice. I mentioned to the person who had asked for me to help that they could purchase recovery disks. Apparently, they thought I was going to provide that for them. I returned the machine to them with a heaqrt felt wish for good luck. Carl
By someone who deleted device drivers and thought they were helping? Would that really be a good idea?
Flogging a dead horse Folks, thanks for the input. I am leaving the decision to those who asked for help. I did tell the person who asked for my help if they had interpreted my agreement as a commitment to paying for any repairs, that they misunderstood my offer. In fact, that was their perception, that I would pay for the repairs, even though I am not a member of their church. I reminded them that Heaven helps those who help themselves.
