Online backup . . . again

I know this has been discussed before, but I'm thinking I really need to do this. Just thinking what a nightmare it would be, trying to reconstruct some of the info on my computer, and backup at home wouldn't help in case of fire or natural disaster. So has anyone had experience with any online backup service? Good, bad, indifferent? The ones I have heard of are Mozy and Carbonite - saw a commercial for Carbonite last night that sounded pretty good.

    Recommendations?

you could try using a back up device and leave it with someone or in a safe deposit box, or with friend or relative. that is what i need to get on the ball and do!

I agree. There's no way I'm trusting all of my data to a third party.

It's actually easy enough to back-up the stuff yourself and buy a little fire proof safe/box to keep the back-up in. Which you really should already own for protection of your important documents.

Be aware most safes offer fire protection for paper but not for data.

I have written up enough businesses for this one.

Burning point for paper is a little over 840 degrees F.

Ray had it wrong, 451 Centigrade didn't work!

business back-up vs. personal back-up to restore a home computer are totally different animals

Especially when you have items like this available for the home user.

That's pretty close to the same thing. According to my calculations, 451 centigrade equals 843.8 Fahrenheit.

Yep, but 451 Centigrade doesn't seem to roll of the tongue the same way.

Heard a story about this and other similar issues (such as the book Catch 22, he was basically forced into it, original title was Catch 18 )

Those will work, but the typical home safe will have a semi melted hard drive or warped CDs if it ever went through a major fire.

Oh, duh! I forgot the name of the book was Fahrenheit 451. Too much lawn mowing and breathing allergens today. Yeah, that's my excuse.
