I just bought a new computer since my previous computer dies. The hard drive was still good so I had it installed on my new computer. I am trying to import the address file from the outlook express from the old hard drive into the new hard drive. I am unable to find the name of it. Can anyone help?

    Thanks

Too weird that you mention that, I just went thru the same thing. DH and our friend (computer dude) did all of it.

Ask RomWorks on here about it... or Ken...

Try doing a seach for files that end in .pst (mailbox.pst) that is what my Outlook saves mine as. Maybe Outlook express is the same.

Search for files ending in .PAB (personal address book).

I think some of the files are different between Outlook and Outlook Express. Big pain.

Thanks for all your suggestions but I am not finding any of those files. I am good at searching. Also i can't run programs from the d drive anymore since i am now using the c drive so I can't go into the program and export.

    outlook uses *.pst files
outlook express uses *.wab files for its address book

whenever I do a search for *.pst or *.wab on both the c and d drives, no files come up. I know I am doing the searches correctly.

In Outlook, Go to "file" then "Import & Export" then choose "Import from another program or file" then click "next" then choose "Personal File Folder (.pst)" (watch the options choice and choose wisely!!) then click "next" then choose "browse" and migrate to the directory listed below. A file called "archive.pst" is what you want. This file will not show in an Explorer search with "Default" file view criteria in explorer tools, that's why you can't find it.

    [drive letter]:\Doucuments and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst

Make sure the settings on your folders are set to "Show hidden files and folders". If you don't have that set, search will ignore them.

OH! Good point, webbie! I miss that most of the time, and my DH has to come in and go looking for me. First question is always "did you look at the hidden files?".

I tried it for a few days and didn't really see any advantages of re-learning the new program. Can you tell us some advatages Ken? Of course being open source is an advantage to me, and that's why I'm interested.

Also, can anyone tell me how to automatically eliminate double entries in my address book. I don't think OE can do this. Am I wrong? Is there a good freeware program available?

Okay, Maybe you can help me here. I want to be able to get email from either computer on a home network and see the same thing on both computers no matter which computer the email was sent from. Can I do that with POP3? I don't want to use webmail. Is that where IMAP comes in?

I cannot find out if Earthlink supports IMAP. I don't think they do, but I can't find anything that specifically says they don't. IMAP info on their website is very scarce. I'm able to get a response from "imap.earthlink.net". It responds by asking for a password, but doesn't show any email. Their webmail is IMAP based, so there must be an available server, right???
