hope someone can give me some tips...my kids pc keeps shutting off after powering up after about 5 minutes....i'm thinking its either the cpu or motherboard. I have swapped out the following: hard drive, ram, power supply + cable, disconneted the cd/dvd drives, disconnected the floopy drive, disconnected the monitor ( but have not swapped out the video card). All cases and power supply fans are running. I don't think it has anything to do with windows cause i've been booting from a cd and i get to the beginning part of reformatting the hard drive.I get to about 15% then it just shuts down. I can't restart unless i physically remove the power cable first. Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

Sounds like it's overheating. Monitor your temps for a while.

i thought so too, so i cleaned mother board and entire case, was'nt too dusty. what range should the temps be?

Sounds like you've found the problem on your own. If the CPU was overheating and initiating the shut down you should now evaluate for the culprit, most likely the fan. As cheap as fans are I would replace it for good measure. A new CPU will cost you 10 times what a fan will cost.

I don't know how adept your kid is with a PC but check to see if the CPU or RAM or Video has not been overclocked. This will also produce the same symptoms.

If you'd like to pinpoint the fan as the problem, here are 2 FREE programs for diagnostics on the CPU and the fan. After exposing the CPU to extreme temperatures its not a bad idea to run a check on it anyway to evaluate it for any damage that may have occured.

    CPU:

    FAN:
This one lets you adjust fan speed. Turning up the RPM might help in your problem. http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpeedFan_d337.html
