I want to scan all my old tax forms and other documents from way back and save them on cds I wont leave them om the computer. I think I want to use pdf software because it uses less KBs than images. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Assuming your scanner software won't scan to PDF, I suggest CutePDF. I'm sure there are many others but this works for me. It functions the same as a printer, you set the properties etc, but it outputs as a PDF instead of a hardcopy. Simple.

CutePDF is the best "free" PDF software I know of. Because you can't scan directly to CutePDF you have to scan the document to "print". And like Gomer said, you'll be using CutePDF as a printer source. You'll essentially be copying and not scanning. The down side, that process won't save you much on file size. You can set the resolution to a lower number in your scanner to lessen the file size but quality may suffer.

I've never used this 'scan directly to PDF' software, but a friend says it's fairly decent and a smaller version is available for laptops.
