Take an old computer and put in an IDE to compact flash adapter. Buy compact flash 1gig/70bucks and run it off the flash. mmmm...peace and quiet.
Keep in mind that compact flash has a limited write/erase lifespan (a lot less than a standard HDD). Operating systems do a lot of writing to the drive, and if you've got a pagefile (or swap if you're using Linux) that's going to run your card under even quicker.
Sorry. His post didn't indicate he was using one of those. (Although "1gb" and "$70" leads me to believe he is not.)
