I have a "main" computer that runs Windows XP. It is connected directly to the modem. I have another computer in the house that runs XP and connects via wireless. Is there a way to set things up so that the other computer (the one running on wireless) can print to the printer that is connected to the "main" computer? Also... I also have a laptop provided by my company at work. I connect this computer to the internet by directly hooking into the modem. I then use VPN to connect to the network at work. Is there anyway to print here at my house with that set up? I don't know if the security will disallow this or not. It is highly secured by my company. Thanks!
I am assuming that since you have a computer connecting via wireless, that the computer with the printer is actually connected to a router. Unless you have a modem that includes a router. Either way both computers should be able to communicate with one another just fine. You need to enable print sharing for the computer with the printer and then share the printer. The second computer should then be able to use the printer. To enable print sharing: 1. Right Click "My Network Places", left click "Properties". 2. Right Click "Local Area Connection", left click "Properties". 3. Make sure the box "This connection uses the following items:" contains "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks". 3a. If File and Print sharing is not enabled, add it using Install>Service To Share Printer: 1. Goto Start>Settings>Printers and Faxes 2. Right Click the Printer you would like to share, left click "Sharing...". 3. Select "Share this printer" and give it a name. To Use Shared Printer: 1. Goto Start>Settings> Printers and Faxes. 2. Click "Add a printer" 3. Select "A network printer, ..." 4. Select "Browse for Printer" 5. You should now be able to find the printer on the other computer. 6. Select the shared printer and click "Next"
printer sharing I have 2 wireless laptops one has a docking station. the laptops are conneceted to RR and a router. I have a HP Laser Jet 6mp priinter that I connect directly to when my computer is in the docking station. How can I print to the printer if the laptop is not in the docking station? Do I need any special eq?
You could get a print server to hook up to your printer. That would allow you to use the printer from either computer without having to hook it up (or turn on another computer for sharing). They are available in wired and wireless form. Be sure you get one that is compatible with the old Centronics printer connector (I don't think that the 6MP has USB).
