Question for the tech gurus

    Ok-I admit Im a complete newbie when it comes to laptops.My brother has a Presario 1800T Im thinking of buying.Trouble is-when he inherited it from his boss,he wanted to ensure there was none of the previous owners personal info on hard drive.He put what he thinks is the recovery disk in-and restarted.He then pushed #4 option-which seems to have erased everything.When it's booted up now-it just says something along the lines of MLDR-press ctrl alt del to restart. My best guess is the OS is missing.Here's my question-if I get this laptop-is there a way I can purchase a recovery disk-or better yet load linux on it?How would I do a install if there is no OS on it now?I'd really like to have this-but it's not going to do me any good as a paperweight!Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Bob
    PS-what he thought was the recovery disk was not in fact that-it was a upgrade disk that doesnt even load now!

    Ken-flavor-dont know! All I know is-I read your answers to other users here.You always are pushing Linux-and I can tell you definetely know what you are talking about.So I figure-if this guys says to use Linux-Im wanting to try it! I already realize what a resource hog windows is.

    PS-just thought of this.Will it load all the drivers that are needed?remember-I may not be able to get the original recovery disk!

    Thanks again.Im picking up the laptop from my bro tomorrow.Now I am confident I can use it-even if unable to get the original disk!

    Thanks Ken.My IT guy from work brought in a disk called slax 5.16-said to try it.He then gave me 6 disks that say :Open Suse 10.1".Not sure waht these are but he's going to get with me.Any idea's what they are? Bob

    Update-last nite I tried the SLAX prog I was talking about.Didnt really understand it,but decided to go ahead and install the Linux disks I was given.Got about a third of the way thru install,and got some kind of error on partitioning.Now I am completely lost.I'm thinking maybe I should have windows installed-because I am so computer illiterate.Although I have to admit-for about 6 months on my desktop PC I ran a duel boot with Xp & Firefox.Loved Firefox-but the stuff Im seeing on the disks I have dont look familiar.Would I be able to carry it in somewhere-remember its completely formatted-and just have someone load me up on an OS? Also-I wonder how much it would cost to double up the memory I have in it?Thanks in advance-Bob
