Well, I have a 2 year old Dell laptop that was working ok enough before I dropped it and shattered the screen. Because I couldn't afford a new one, a family member gave me a much cheaper Acer laptop to have. Long story short- tonight apparently something got dropped on the edge of it, and now the screen is cracked and there are black lines bleeding through it. I don't know if that will get worse, but it isn't easy to use it like this. I realize I should have been more careful with both laptops, but that's hindsight. So, does anyone have any suggestions about where I could take either or both of these laptops to have the screens replaced? Is that something that someone local can do, and if so, who? Any idea how much that may cost? Any information would be greatly appreciated! I need one ASAP for working at home, and can't buy a new computer. Both of these are out of warranty (not that it would be covered anyway). Thanks in advance for advice.
I buy either used OEM (original equipment manufacturer) or new aftermarket. If I buy OEM, I try to get it with the upper lid included and then I just swap the whole assembly out at the hinge. It can be a real pain sometimes to swap the screen from the upper lid. You might even be able to buy a whole laptop that has an issue with something on the lower half but has a good display, for less than just the display alone.
Many times any laptop LCD will work with your model. It's just a matter of unplugging the wire braid from your broken screen and putting it on one that fits your case screen frame. The LCD socket is universal. If you have a laptop with a good screen it may work as a replacement? Check with the family for broken laptops with good screens? Main Street Pawn in Clayton has used Acer & Dell (15" & 16") screens with installation for $95. (17") - $105 They also buy broken laptops. They have odd hours so you may want to call first. 553-0299
There is a company that specializes in things like that up near Brier Creek that i have heard great things about called CPR. 919-747-4861 and they have a website www.cpr-raleigh.com
You can get them on Ebay, depending on the size you can expect to pay $40 - $80. If you have any mechanical / technical at all you can probably do it. Most of them are not hard to replace. You can even find tutorials on Youtube for most models.
