I have tried to download and install the MS Service Pack 3 four times now and each tim eit downloads but in the middle of the Install I get an error and then it un-installs everything it had started installing and then the little exclamation point pops back up saying I have updates and it is the SP 3 again.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Yeah, avoid it, my laptop had problems and after a week turned into a brick.

My company Geek now has it.

No problems with it here. Three towers and one laptop of my own, and every XP box or laptop I refurbish.

Use the Stand Alone distribution copy. Here's the link:SP3 Don't run it online. Download it. Close all programs and run it from your hard drive. Wouldn't hurt to turn off virus protection.

If using Zone Alarm, after SP3 is done set your Zone Alarm security to low, reboot, and then set it back to medium.

    try this

-Go to start>run> type "cmd" and hit enter.
-Then in the command windows type "net stop wuauserv"
-Then go to "C:\windows" and delete the folder "software distribution"
-Then go to "C:\windows\system32" and delete the folder call "software distribution" there also.
-now go back to the command window you opened before and type "net start wuauserv" and hit enter.

Now try to do the update again. As with any update it is recommended to close all other open programs before you start the update process.
