I run XP on a PC that's probably 4-5 years old. I'm pretty used to taking care of maintenance by myself, but I'm stuck in a rut.

I've defraged, clean out all the old files, deleted tons of "crap" that was just taking up memory, removed programs, checked for errors, run my spyware/malware software, and my virus software, etc.

Other than paying one of you gurus to come out and work your magic, is there anything else I can do to make it stop running so slow?

Ken, I really don't want to change my operating system, I just want it to move as fast (or close) as it did when it was installed.

    Any other suggestions? :)

Don't mean to hijack the thread but it is along the same lines. Ken, son says, after looking at my computer, that not only does it need a good cleaning but he thinks i should back up everything and wipe the hard drive - too much junk accumulated is making it run so slow. i told him about your Linux and he said he would like to talk to you about the user friendliness of it, he hasn't checked up on it in awhile.

What do you think about the wiping thing - that kinda sounds scary to me.

Cool, he is starting back to school in a couple weeks plus will be working so i am still planning on getting it to you as soon as everything slows down at home, i.e. fence, bonus room, incoming company :D

Hey Ken, we have a couple old computers here at work we are going to donate to charity, just wondering how much you would charge to clean the hard drives before they go - don't need a back-up or anything.

i can type of any type of invoice stipulating it was done for the charity if that will suffice. We just want to make sure none of our business info is left on there for whoever gets the computers.

Just two i believe, will have to go back in the storage room and check. Thanks, can you pm me with an approx price so i can get the owner to approve - i think it is a better use of them than just sitting collecting dust.

Just use them for target practice when you get all the data off.

Hopefully you will do more than a quick format as that erases nothing.

    Take a look at http://dban.sourceforge.net/

Darik's Boot and Nuke is very easy to use and can do all the way to a DOD level wipe.

    Good Luck with that.
