Okay, so I'm PC illiterate, lets get that out of the way first-hand.

I have some really cool stuff saved on my pc and it would take too much time to back it all up if I don't have to - Cool, but it isn't like I'm gonna open some of those files on a weekly or monthly basis -some, possibly never! Whats the proper 'puter lingo for 'packrat'?

So, here's the deal, I start up this morning and up comes that pesky little error reporting message - I think this one included the word "serious" - hey, it was BC, so not totally aware.

I reported the error and then it opened a page! Wow! Magic! That's never happened before, usually they just thank me 8)
Microsoft sent me a page and used their stationary with the
word "crash" on it in the pretty msblue tone, which I'm
    pasting below -

    My :?: is (finally)
If I do what it suggests, will I literally DUMP my memory into cyberspace and poof, that's all she wrote?

Everything seems to be working just fine on this puppy, I've checked out a bunch of files and everything will still open and copy and ya,da-ya,da-

Thanks for any info you can provide -

Step 2: Submit an error report

If you’ve already configured your computer to generate an error report file, this file was created after your last crash. You can now upload the file by clicking the following link. Note: To submit an error report, you will need to have an ActiveX control installed on your computer. If you do not already have this control installed, click the information bar at the top of the next browser window to install the control.
GoSelect and upload complete memory dump file

Sending the report only helps MS and not you. It won't get any help sent your way. Puter lingo for Packrat = "Garbage Collector"

Are you positive this was an MS alert? Could this be Spyware? Wouldn't hurt to run a spyware program. I recommend Spybot.

    1. GO HERE: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
    2. Click on the D/L button for this item "Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4"
    3. Save it to a directory where you know you can find it and than double click it to load the software. UNCHECK THE CHOICE TO LOAD "TEA TIMER"
    4. When it starts click the "continue" button till it gets you to the program.
    5. Click on "Search For Updates" and then check all found except for any Tea Timer updates. Click download.
    6. After it's done click on the "Search & Destroy" in the upper left menu.
    Click "Check for Problems".
    7. When it's done scrolling thru the numbers in the lower left screen click "FIX".

If you still see the alert after a reboot let me know. If you need someone for in-home service PM me for prices and references.

Thanks for your advice. I just got in from work and unfortunately, I'm heading back out again in a little bit. No error came up when I turned pc back on to use it just now.

As for spyware - I have EZ Armor Firewall and EZ Antivirus. It's on all of the time according to my toolbar. I run scans about every 7 - 10 days.

Should I run the Spybot S&D in addition, or would that be redundant?

    Thanks for your patience!

    Not True...

Not true, Doc... When I actually have sent the error report to MS (not very often), I have received a followup message with "There is a fix for this issue available on the MS site." It actually had a link to the KB article and the download. Nice, but it has only happened like this to me once...

Thanks for the info JayT. I've never had one come back. How did you receive the message? Was it a screen prompt or an email? Which version of MS were you using? Was it an quick response?

I'm curious because I'll start sending them if it will save me time when searching for a resolution to the problems I find on PC's.

Jeeze Louise, my pc is about driving me nuts! I can't take the errors anymore! I've got my spyware, anti-virus and firewalls all onboard and have installed updates and scan every other week. . . still a PITA!

Ready to drop kick this darn thing! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I'm debating buying a Mac - how difficult will it be for me to get used to one?

Will 'word' programs work on one? Have a lot of work backed up on cd that I'd need to use daily.

The only problem I really have is the fact that you can't go look at one and test drive it in the stores, no one sells them around here right? You order them from the Apple store and that's it, it gets delivered, correct?

Ugh, I hate when technology hiccups like this!

    Any input?

Maybe you should consider getting a "tuneup" for your PC. I had Romworks do mine (and a few other things too), but there are others on this forum who would help you. At minium, it probably would be worth your peace of mind.

And FWIW, my aunt is exasperated with her IMac, and just yesterday, was asking me for advice about getting a PC.

Like Animal said, invest the $60 and let a pro get it running right for you.

Linux works pretty well and can be installed by the layperson these days. Give it a shot. You can do email and chat, and office tools are pretty good. What more do you need?
