http://www.wral.com/news/state/story/4111058/ In the news story linked above members of the blue ribbon commission stated that the state should create a millage tax to tax everyone for how many miles they drive. I don't know anything specific about it and highly doubt anything will ever come of it, but I thought others might like to know about it.
With more fuel efficient cars, and electrics becoming more viable, I guess they have to do something to raise enough money for the highway fund. I wonder what they will do about having us report our mileage and pay the tax? Can't you just see a new department, more bureaucracy? Fun, fun, fun.
Sounds like another way for the government to stick their greedy hands in the consumers pockets
Serious question, not being snarky: how should we pay for building and maintaining roads & highways? Currently, I believe most of that money comes from gas taxes. So if I drive a plug-in hybrid, and only drive short distances each day, I would hardly ever have to buy any gas. Even though I'm still using the roads, I would no longer be contributing to their upkeep through my gas tax. One solution to that problem is the mileage tax they're talking about. Another would be to use money from the general fund, which comes from sales & income tax, primarily. Still another might be to increase sales tax on automobiles.
I might have more sympathy for NC if they didn't ALREADY have some of the highest taxes around. Let's start by letting them be fiscally responsible with what they are already collecting before we start letting them have more. I don't know about you, but I am about taxed to death.
Exactly. i actually saw something about this on one of the news shows and they were talking exactly about that, without the gas tax there would be no funding for roads, bridges, etc and that was one idea that was being thrown around - it has to come from somewhere.
Well there is a down side to having the 2nd most miles of paved road behind Texas. We built it and now we have to maintain it.
and thats down too because either people can't get loans to buy a car, or they're not buying because they're worried they'll get laid off!
