I have a windows 7 laptop and I have been backing it up on a 500 gb external drive. I tried to back up and I have everything connected but when I hit the "backup now" button nothing happens. Any suggestions? Is there a better application that I could use for back ups?

Is it giving you an error code or is nothing happening?

All your cache and temp files should be cleaned out before doing a backup in Win7.

When a backup is creating the shadow copy; the anti-virus software (microsoft security essentials) finds a java virus in the cache directories. The anti-virus software (microsoft security essentials) removes it but some how it causes the backup to fail. The virus seems to be seeded in multiple cache directories.

To delete the Java Temp files:
    1. From the Start button, select Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel, open the Java Control Panel.
    3. Click on Settings button under Temporary Internet Files.
    4. Click Delete Files button at the Temporary Files Settings window.
    5. Click on OK button at confirmation dialog.

    Try the backup again.

Make sure the Windows Backup service is started.
    1. Go to Start > Run and type services.msc.
    2. Double click the Windows Backup service to bring up properties.
    3. Select automatic and then click start. If it was anything other than "auto" you'll have to start it if you don't reboot. Use the drop down menu and then chose Start.

Also check if the dependency service/services for are started:
    1. Go to Start > Run and type services.msc.
    2. Check for Windows Backup Service and right click on it. Click on Properties and under the Dependencies tab you will find the Dependent services.
    3. Follow the above 3 steps and start these services too.

PS: In lieu of fixing all the crap thats wrong with Win7 (SFI) - download one of the many free backup ap's that do work without problems. The DVD burn ap that came on your laptop probably has a backup ap also.

Make sure your backups are appending and not making an single backup everytime. If you are the drive maybe full.

Windows7 has a built in backup feature built in. Before I splurge on. Let me check to see if I am repeating others first.
