got my network running. I'm using the network name (ssid) and password that came with the router. Ipad works great upstairs. Closest neighbor is 350-400 yards away. Anything else I should do security wise. Ipad won't work in the yard at more than 150 feet.

sorry to be rude, but your a stupid if you don't turn on any security. You asked "is there anything else I should do", you haven't done anything, Change your SSID, change the default password and Please, please turn on some security, IPAD can handle many different types of security and it is easy to set it up.

what else can I do? I've got windows firewall and webroot running too. Is there anything else? Cisco says their ID and password are unique and they certainly seem obscure to me.

I think he means the password for access to the router. They all come with "ADMIN" as a standard login and "USER" as password. If you don't change the router access password, someone can log on to your router and change the WEP that protects wireless access.

To access the router setup use a web browser and type http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar. From there go to TOOLS and change the login and password. Write both on the bottom of the router with a felt pen so you always know where to find it. Write your WEP code on there also in case you forget it.
