Oh I know what you mean. I don't want to ask her because she is the educator and has the experience with these children. I will advocate for my child, but of course this is just the beginning of the year and I don't want to get ahead of myself here! I am solely curious on how children get into these programs. :)

I believe, based on my experience last year, that the parents CAN request it through the teacher. DS's teacher is the one who initiated it, so I am not sure. Although he tested well, he missed being able to go to the center by 1 point I think. He does do the extra group at the school though for now. I have a meeting with the teacher, requested by them, to re-evaluate next Tuesday. Now, I have NO idea what that means. My biggest complaint is that DS knew (they told him, I would have preferred he not know) that he was being tested for it, and was very disappointed when he didn't get to go to Smt. Yes, I know, all our kids are in for disappointments in life. 2nd grade just seemed early for it.

The reason I didn't want him to know is that my parents made the mistake of telling one of my sisters what her IQ was, which was borderline genius level, and she ALWAYS made a big deal about it. I believe there are all different kinds of "smart" and don't necessarily think kids need to know their IQ's. I have to wonder if that's part of the reason she never really lived up to her potential, she was too smart for her own good.

I think most teachers would let you know. I know of one instance where a parent really had to push to get a child tested but I think that is the exception. The teacher we had the hardest year with is the actually the one who got my child into AIG.
