you must not have kids at any of the jo co high schools -- they are all over capacity several by several hundred students -- with classes held in media centers and former teacher workrooms -- not to mention the lunch rotation starting at what most would consider near breakfast time just to get all the students through -- i have 2 at chs and know of families at wjhs -- they are over capacity and the county is in desperate need for a high school NOW
Ann Williams, superintendent of facility services, says she can get a high school built in just over 18 months
the schools listed will take care of the students we have now -- there is little wiggle room for future growth in the county -- the commissioners and school board must be proactive in managing growth and planning for the future

please don't make that assumption -- the last bond issue that built several schools including wjhs has NOT been paid off -- think of it more in-terms that this is a second or third mortgage

Stoplight for Riverwood but not East Clayton Elementary Schools! And now we know that Fred Smith has more influence than Becky Flowers. Please don't tell Becky!

In general, JoCo does a pretty good job managing the bond money. They use a standard template for building new schools which saves money. Unlike our neighbors in Wake who build palaces and every school is unique. I would vote for the bonds again, thanks for mentioning the vting day.

Which traffic light at Riverwood? There is not a light to turn into the school.

I was more focusing on West than all the HS in the area.

The school board is trying to be proactive. The commissioners aren't.

Actually, the last bond issue built the new elementary schools, did renovations to several other elementary and middle schools, and infused the community college.

This is not the first bond vote, there have been several in the recent past.

If you kids ARE at West, they would likely be allowed to finish at West, not always the case but the system will usually try to accomodate you.

As to the rec money, specifically the Cleveland Area, that money is for the rural athletic association, GCAA. It is targeted at very specific projects that were presented to the county rec committee some time ago.

There is now a light at the intersection of Pritchard (the road going by Riverwood) and Covered Bridge. That left turn was extremely dangerous with the amount of dump trucks, work trucks, and people !@# bent to get to Raleigh in the morning. 55 was a minimum only for most of them, trust me!

The Cleveland HS is projected to be built in 2011, and yes it will take some students from West.

Yes, something like that. I was able to talk with one of the County Commissioners over the weekend, and she confirmed for me that there has been a series of bonds over the years, and of course some of the older ones have been paid off. In addition, she reminded me that the Commissioners refinanced some of the older bonds to get a better interest rate and save money for the taxpayers. So those actions freed up money in the budget to apply to payments on the current bond issues that are on the ballot, meaning they will not have to increase taxes if the bond issues pass. I believe all of the county commissioners support all 3 bond issues.

The way I see it, we need the additional school capacity, and any alternative to the school bond issue (any alternative that is currently available to us) will cause tax increases, possibly substantial tax increases. I'm planning to go by the Board of Elections office and vote in favor of all 3 bond issues this week.

Thanks KD for finding out that info, I personally agree and support the bond issues especially since I have two young children (which on the contrary the School Violence thread is scaring the bageeezzzaasss out of me ;-))

I just wanted to understand the process so I can make an informed vote.

    Thanks,

Thanks for the update, KDs. I couldn't quite remember all the specifics. I'm for the bonds, all issues.

My brother & I were #95 & 96 yesterday. Could not be any easier. If you happen to be downtown, just stop by the BOE, it only takes a minute.

Am I the only one who thinks it is not wise to dispurse bond funds to Rural Athletic Associations and Community Organizations instead of developing a county-wide recreation plan? We will never see the type of facilities Wake has if money is managed this way.

The current bond will provide the following funds to rural associations and commuity organizations ...

    Cleveland $335,000
    McGees $300,000
    Meadow $225,000
    Archer Lodge $225,000
    Corinth $110,000
    Glendale Chapel $110,000

    Just as a reminder...

Bonds are not free money. They are, in effect, a loan by investors who expect to not only be paid back, but paid back with interest.

Also worth noting that the Cleveland AAA (GCAA) is at the TOP of the Rec. Bond $$$. Not sure if that is need based or if the GCAA had the best writers to turn in the correct forms/request/proposals and so forth.
    Anyhooo - we are tops!
