Hugh, I agree with you 100% and I support Homeschooling, I wauld like to do it myself but I agree there should be some sort of check/balance. Some folks *do* use it as an opportunity to go off the grid and not be held accountable for their actions. Lynn Paddock was homeschooling. I have had this discussion before with other folks, and they get rather defensive - downright bent out of shape. I don't want the govt in my life anymore than I have to either, but why not err on the side of caution in this instance. If you have nothing to hide and are effectively schooling your children - then what have you got to hide?
Actually ... this family is NOT on the list of registered NC homeschools. I just checked the list for Edgecombe County published by NC Department of Non-Public Instruction. It is current for all homeschools registered on or before 03/31/08.
The WRAL articles said they were home schooled and that they were here for only a few months; maybe your list was not updated.
"Carolyn Pollard, who lives across the road from the McMillans, said the family moved to the area about three months ago from Florida. The children were homeschooled, and the family kept to themselves, she said."
This is unacceptable. How do we know if these kids are being educated, or in this case treated better than animals if there is no accountability? We ALL pay when these children grow up dumb and abused. A five-person staff? The article goes onto say that 362 homeschools were inspected last year - this is ONLY 1% of homes!! And this lady - OK lady, yeah. Your kids are educated and taken care of, so it doesn't affect YOU and YOURS. How do we know the vast majority have careful, loving parents? There is no accountablity. How do we know??? Again, why not err on the side of caution. If HSers are a registered, recognized entity and every child in this nation has a right to an education..... How do we ensure these kids are getting the education they are entitled to? By a little intervention, sorry. And I'm not saying they need to come in your home and snoop around - unless there is a red flag at some sort of mandated yearly testing, where the results are maintained and analyzed. And you don't really need alot of people for that... just a good software program.
This story really upset me especially when I read that they tied him up the night before and that it wasn't until 4:30 in the afternoon the next day that the "mom"/"stepmom" or whatever, found him!!! So they tie him up and then go about their business the next day and then decide to check on him???? He must have been one scared little boy not to have called for help or anything. Maybe they should be tied up and left alone for a while and see how they liked it!
