Yesterday there was a feller in Lowes talking to the associate about a door cause his had been broke into. The sales guy said that another guy had just came in the day before looking for the same door because his had been kicked in. Looks like it's more common than the dang swing flu.

I just heard from a JC officer that Broadmoor was hit last night. Unlocked cars were broken into to and someone apparently had a handgun stolen from a vehicle. Don't know if the vehicle was locked but that's a very good reason not to leave your handguns in the car.

So do we! After one break-in in our "locked" vechicle. That was enough for us. I dont work just so someone can come and steal my steal. At least we'll be able to get the car/tag number.

My Mom leaves her garage door wide open all the time. Especially when she is GONE! The worse part about it that there is an attic access door in the garage that leads inside the house to the hallway. For the life of me I can't make her understand how dangerous it is! That was how I always got back into the house when I locked myself out. She sleeps with a small, flimsy little steak knife by her bed. And she lives in fear of someone breaking in but doesn't do anything to keep it from happening. :banghead:

What type of Security Cameras do you have, and how do you have it setup? If you don't want to post the details I understand, but I would like to get one setup, and not sure how about starting to get it setup, type of Cameras, do you have it record to a computer or dvr? I also don't wish to spend and arm and a leg to setup a system, so I don't mind doing the setup myself.

    Thanks

Customer called last week, she had gotten the *night owl* brand for Christmas and wanted someone to install it for her. So we did. Cameras worked fine, BUT the DVR was broken out of the box. She has to send it back and wait for it to be repaired or be sent another one before we can network it for her.

In other words... watch what you buy.

Her whole 4 camera system costs $279 (you get what you pay for)

Also this is most likely just a camera monitoring system and not a true fully functional security system that has staff monitoring the system when armed.

If you have a computer webcam, just Google "melioris melcam". Its a program that alows you to use it on your computer. It only cuts on when it detects movement, and it gives you a free trial for something like 21 days before you have to buy it ( I think its like $20).

I've used it for hidden cameras on job sites, etc in the past and caught several criminals. Matter of fact RPD used my video to apprehend some characters by giving the video to Channel 5 news. I was watching the news one night and was like "Hey, Thats the video I gave RPD last week!!!"

Got one pointing out my upstairs window lookin into my front yard right now.

Home Security Suggestion/Inexpensive slide type dead bolts

Unfortunately the types of break-ins occurring around here are of your smash and grab type. Quick in and out while no one is home. Probably being committed by a drug addicted in need of some quick cash. That’s why leaving behind big ticket items that are harder to get rid of. Jewelry has become really easy to sell again because of all these places buying gold with no questions asked. Pawn shops can leave a trail.

Yes alarm systems are great and in today’s world are really a necessity. They will deter a more ‘professional’ criminal who wants to clean your house out but these dirt bags committing the smash and grab type of crimes usual don’t care because they are only going to be in your house for a couple of minutes. (Harleygirl not trying to hurt your business here just trying to give helpful advice)

So on any entry door to your home you should have additional dead bolts. Particularly un-keyed slide type dead bolts on any door that you normally don’t use to enter your home. So these doors came remain dead bolt when you are not home. For example we use the door through the garage when we come home, so all other doors have 2 additional slide dead bolts on them. One near the top of the door and one near the bottom. Including the door knob and a keyed dead bolt this makes 4 points that the door is secured to the frame. This makes the door much more difficult to kick in. I use dead bolts that are about 4 inches long with about and inch of it entering the door frame. Yes the door can still be broken down but its going to take a lot of effort and not just a swift kick. Also if you have a window in an exterior door place the dead bolt away from the window so they can’t break the window and reach the dead bolt.

Sometimes I feel like Maxwell Smart with all the locks on his apartment door when I have to unlock one of my doors but it’s a good deterrent and can keep someone out of your house. Hope this helps.

And the best way to prevent the door from being smashed in or kicked open is to have steel frame doors and jambs.

    Lafayette Place

This evening, just before 5pm, my husband was home alone. He saw an OLDER RED MINIVAN (possibly caravan) pull into the driveway. Took a few minutes for the men to get out. One rang the doorbell, then knocked and knocked. Hubby got his gun and just waited...the dogs were both barking. A second man appeared on the front porch..again knocking and knocking. He called the police at this point. Husband never answered the door...and as they were 'walking away', they looked in a window and saw him. (oops!) Pulled down our long driveway and sat at the bottom of the driveway looking up to our house. Got a license plate number and gave it to the JC sheriff.
Scary. Be vigilant...and although these guys could very well have been innocent and just trying to sell something...it seemed odd and wasnt worth the risk!

FYI: Layfayette Place is off of Cornwallis near the 42 intersection...just past Carrington Place.
