Why not Chuck E. Cheese Pizza on Capital Blvd? They've got an indoor playland area and games that a four year old can play. Plus, they can provide Chuck E. Cheese at the party I think from what I remember. Of course, they get rather busy on the weekends.

You could also check with the Marbles museum downtown Raleigh, which is geared toward kids and scientific interaction I think. Plus, they have IMAX.

Or even better for these age kids, they have merged with the 'play space' now!

    I have a stupid ? Why does a 4 yr old need such a grandeiouse (sp) party. It's 4.

How about a couple of "friends" from church, pre-school, family come over and celebrate? Take a bunch of pics, eat cake, open presents and then its over. Unless the friends have a sleep over?

I'm probably missing something because I don't have kids, but really?

The first real birthday I can remember was when I was 12. We had a pool (don't start with me) and had a pool party. Home made ice cream, fun in the pool, presents - just good kid fun.

I agree that an elaborate party is not necessary but my DS has so much fun with his little friends at preschool, I would love to give them more opportunities to interact and play. Plus, I am looking forward to getting to meet and visit with some of the parents, too. If it was warm weather, it would be a no brainer - I'd just invite 'em over, throw some hot dogs on the grill and we'd celebrate on the patio. Somehow the thoughts of inviting even 3 or 4 preschool boys over to run around in the house does not promote comforting vibes.
We have done the family thing up until this year but our family is terribly small and the "party" would consist of 7 people - 3 of which are elderly. I want my little guy to have a happy birthday and it be something special.
Anyway, hope that explains my reasoning for wanting to do something fun for this birthday!

Here's a sad story for ya - when my DS was in the 3-4 grade he wanted to have a school friend party, so we did not invite friends from the neighborhood (there were only a few of them anyway). His b-day usually falls around JC spring break. He gave out the invites at school the week before - I asked them to call for directions - thinking that way I'd know who was coming. Well either they didn't give the invites to their parents (left em their bookbag) or just forgot because SB was the week before - ANYWAY - NO ONE showed up for his party!! I got one call the day of saying their child was sick and couldn't come.......how sad is that  I had gone ahead and made a cake, had party bags etc...turned out that the neighborhood kids showed up to play so that was his party - but he didn't get any gifts... Lesson learned the hard way!
I would like to add that he handled it just fine, it really didn't bother him. Bothered me more than him...........

Well, I've got a soon to be 14 yo in a couple weeks. She's always wanted a bday party, so up until the last couple years, we've always done, skating, ice skating, bowling, etc. and everyone in her class would show up. This year, I think she just wants to go to Kanki and then have a couple friends sleep over.

My 10 yo who's bday is around July 4 has never wanted a party, except last year, so we did a pool party a month early, before school let out. I told her to invite her whole class, so she'd have a big party...she said nope, I only want to invite 4, I said why? She says well they are all okay, but I only really like my 4 close friends...LOL (she's just like her mom). I think this year she wants me to do the same thing...and no boys allowed. I told her she could invite her whole class again, but she said, nope I don't want all those boys at my house. LOL.

I'd like to second, third, fourth the nomination for Up and Away. We had my son's 5th birthday party scheduled there for last weekend, but he spiked a 105 degree temperature on Friday night so we called to see if we could postpone. The owner, Jennifer, was very sweet and understanding, said that our ice cream cake that she had ordered from Dairy Queen would keep for a week, and that she could most certainly fit us in for one week later, at the same time.

A party there for 2 hours is $125, and an extra $25 gets you the bounce house. That includes the cake from DQ and a party-themed craft. I attended a party there for my friend's kids last January and was very impressed with how organized they were and how 'on-track' everything seemed. Great value for your money. Everywhere else I called wanted close to $200 and even $300 in some cases.
