A few years ago there were both manual and automatic.... I took a test on an automatic (thank goodness). I loved the being a TA, didn't like the bus. I wanted a second adult to help discipline while I drove.

Another thing to consider is that if you are thinking of becoming a TA and you're already a regular sub at a particular school, you do have a heads up AND a better chance of moving into a TA position when one becomes available. I've seen that happen so many times. Good luck!

**AND when you are subbing, let the TA in that class help you as much as possible. They are there day to day and really help it go smoother if you ask or let them. If it's an older grade that doesn't use TA's get there a few extra minutes early and ask the next door teacher for some hints on how the class runs. Easier than getting a surprise and throwing your whole day off. Teaching is like a train ride. When it's going good it good. When you slip off the track in one area, the whole train can become derailed. But nothing works better with a group of kids than bribery....come prepared with a bribe...and when they see you next time they WILL remember that. One of the only subs I remember growing up had a bribe system of adding minutes to the corner of the chalk board. These were accumulated or deducted during the day for good/bad behavior. She would give us that time at the end of the day for free time or games..etc. Everyone wanted her for a sub cause she made sure that any effort in being good for the sub was rewarded. And she stayed in control that way. It was cool.
