Did you read Sgt. Crowley's report? Salvation posted a link to it in one of the multiple Gates threads. Sgt. Crowley was obviously satisfied that Gates was who he said he was, and had a right to be there. Why did Crowley invite him outside after he showed him the ID? Because he couldn't arrest him for yelling inside his own house, but he could for yelling on the front porch with bystanders out there? If we're going put ideas in Gates's head, we might as well put ideas in Crowley's head, too.

Shadow Rider said, days ago, this wasn't about race, it was about egos, and I think he was absolutely right.

As I said, you assume one side because that side said so. Even though some of the aspects of that side's story are in dispute from others and the prior documentation.

This column gives a feel for what might have been behind Gates's attitude, and the columnist is no liberal.

There is a difference between a single event, however horrendous, and a pattern. Then too, somebody on this forum in the last few days cited the death of a friend in an accident involving an illegal immigrant as part of the basis for his animosity toward all hispanics. You're probably a better person than that, but many people are influenced by their experiences.

And you assume the one side because the cops are the ones on the other.

No, I assumed neither but waited to see what the independent evidence showed. Police can be in the right as well as wrong, just like everyone else. One cannot assume one over the other without risk of being proved wrong.

In this case the 911 tape indicated no reference of blacks, which would make one question the police report's accuracy on that regard. Thus, what else should be in question concerning that report?

Saw Sgt. Crowley's press conference this evening and he certainly didn't come off as an irrational bigot. Looks like circumstance and the heat of the moment just got to all those involved and a week later stirred by someone who should have known better.

Just saw Gate's response and it looks like he also took the high road.
