I went by Harris Teeter this evening. My bill before coupons was $105 ... I paid $48. I did buy a few things that were on sale but I did not have triple coupons for so my coupon savings was even better than my total shows.

Thank you for scheduling a home workshop, Amy! I hope you can all come! If you have any questions about the workshop content, feel free to send me a PM. If you are planning on coming, contact Amy for directions and to RSVP sp we know how many to expect.

Great job, ncmom!! My goal is to save at least 50% off my grocery bill and you did it!

Here are 2 of the receipts from my Harris Teeter adventures this weekend. Let's just say my overstock is quite healthy again!

To get the total amount the groceries would have cost without sales or coupons, add up the balance due line, the coupons tendered line (this is how much the coupons I gave them took off the total cost) and the total VIC savings this order line (these are the savings I realized from the weekly sale prices).

The total VIC savings this year line indicates how much I have saved on Harris Teeter sales alone in 2005. It does not take into account the amount I have saved using coupons! That number is MUCH higher.

So for the first receipt, the total amount the groceries would have cost before sales and coupons was: $48.49. I paid them $5.70, a savings of 88.3 %.

For the second receipt, the total amount the groceries would have cost before sales and coupons was: $105.23. I paid them $12.30, a savings of 88.4 %.

We are pretty well stocked on cat food, hefty plates, uncle bens rice, pancake mix, popcicles, ortega tortillas, toothbrushes, tp, yogurt, sour cream, syrup, shampoo, conditioner.............

It will be great when the HT at 401 and 1010 opens. It's that much closer. Now if only we could get one in Clayton or 40/42!!

What do you all think ... do you print out a lot of coupons from the internet? Do you save a lot of money that way?

I'm trying to decide if it'd be a good investment, as well as a good resource to have. (Trying to justify the cost of buying one.)

If I could prove to myself that I've saved money .. because I've used the coupons .. that I've PRINTED using the printer, .. then it practically pays for the printer. See?

So do you all really use online coupons?

Not a stupid question at all, tit4tat. The 2% tax is for the food items I purchased. The 7% tax is on the non-food items I purchased. The total tax was not 9%, but a different tax amount for food and non-food items. Ahhh, the joy of tax. :?

Elims, there are a number of stores that no longer accept internet printed coupons so I would be careful about spending the $$ on a printer you will use just for printing out coupons. There was a tremendous amount of coupon fraud about 1 year ago and people all around the US were using fake coupons for free products and the stores were stuck with the loss since the manufacturer's would not reimburse for them.

    Hope that helps! :)

Try not to buy other things when shopping at HT. Their prices are VERY expensive!!!! Just go for the coupon savings. I was totally out of milk when I went Sunday night and was shocked that they sell a 1/2 gal. for about the same price I pay for a gallon at BJs. WalMart is just down the street from HT and worth the extra time to run by there to pick up extras after coupon shopping.

I guess it is worth it to drive to 3 or for stores if your saving so much then?
And what about places like BJ's and Sam's are they really worth the memberships? And do they do the coupon offers too?

I guess in some sense it depends how much you want to save. I personally hit stores like HT and Kroger once or twice during the weeks when they are tripling or Super Double coupons (where they double coupons with a face value of $1.00) It is during these times I stock up on staples (i.e. TP, tissues, cleaning supplies, frozen goods, toothpaste, soap, etc...). Then I go to Food Lion (I like their buy 1 get one free sales) and/or Walmart for other items I need. TIP ... if you have a coupn that says take $1 off if you buy 2 ... and an item is on sale buy 1 get 1 free ... you are buying 2 and can use the coupon!

About once a month or so I go to the bread store and stock up the freezer. My favorite is the Wonder Outlet on hwy 401 in Garner. I usually by very tasty and fresh Wonder stoneground, 100% whole wheat loaves @ 3 for around $2.69. My guess is that same loaf sells for around that per loaf at most grocery chains.

If you have a little time when heading out to shop and are going to Fuquay, check on-line for the sales ads for Winn Dixie, Food Lion and Kroger. Each may have a few items you need at significant savings. The stores are so close together it is easy to run in and grab those items. Go with a list to avoid impulse buying!!

I rarely shop at Winn Dixie. I do however watch their sales flyers. Occassionally they run buy 1 get TWO free sales. These are GREAT especially when they have meat included in the sale.

I find BJs membership of value for our family. We go once a week and usually plan the trip to co-inside with a visit to the Garner library and stores at White Oak. I think I paid $2.54 per gallon of skim milk last week. I also get gas there. It is often cheaper than stations @ 40/42 and 210. You can use coupons at BJs (often 2 manufactured coupons per each bulk product) but I do not think Sams takes coupons. Sams also does not have discounted gas and is out of the way for me.

Actually the Sams on South Saunders St. did just put in their own gas station. THey had a grand-opening for it last Saturday, and when I was there 2 weeks ago, they had gas at 1.99 which was less than anyone else on S.Saunders St. Now, I'll agree it is out of the way to go there, but if I'm heading that way (Sams does have a a few items I can only get there) I'll atleast be able to filler'up for a few cents cheaper than the other places.

I have coupons that say "Not subject to Doubling" do they not double these at Harris Teeter or the other locations or do they ignore that. Wasn't sure. Thanks.

    frugalmomoftwo Well-Known Member

Whether your Do Not Double coupon gets doubled depends on the location and the cashier. Some stores are very strict about not doubling coupons that say DND or Do Not Double. The Harris Teeter in Fuquay has very well-trined cashiers who look closely at every coupon. Other HT's have cashiers who are not as well-trained or who just don't bother to look. If your cashier doesn't block the coupon from doubling then the next step is to see if the register will automatically double it. Here is the rule of thumb about that:

If the coupon bar code starts with a 5, it can double, but if the cashier is paying attention, he or she will not let it double. Also if the amount of the coupon is higher than the coupon amount the store normally doubles, then it will not double.

If the coupon bar code starts with a 9 then it will not double.

Let's have a show of hands from those who knew that obscure tidbit of bar code trivia!

Hope that helps mamax3. :D I am looking forward to doing your Home Workshop next week. I hear we have around 8 or so interested from 4042.com! I can't wait to meet you all - will you confess your usernames, though? That's the real question! Remember, if you bring a friend to the workshop, the cost is only $8 for each of you instead of $10.

Also, heads up on the Target summerville clearance. It is at 50% now and should be going to 75% off soon. I'll post when it does.
