    I think you meant "unless you are from the North" cause being from the South would make it like 5 or 6 syllables. :wink:

    My daughter said there were 4 syllables in the word. After showing the teacher the dictionary, the teacher said maybe 3.
    She was writing a sonet with 10 syllables in each line. The teacher counted off because she said definitely has only 2 syllables therefore making only 8 in that line.

    Absolutely!

    She's probably saying "def-nit-ly" - hence 3 syllables - instead of "def-i-nit-ly."

    I vote for 4 syllables. Uh, I think it's 4. Yeah, definitely 4! Well, I suppose you could pronounce it with 3. No, it's 4, definitely 4. Definitely.

    But, what do I know; I'm a Democrat.

    The only other explanation is that the teacher read it as definate? (which would be 3)

    Clearly on this site it shows 4 syllables in definitely.

    For 2 syllables she would have to say definite---ly.
