I agree with almost everything you say with the exception of the rod/staff being basically surmised into one. I think the Bible makes a distinction between the definition of rod AND staff. The rod is indicative of discipline and the staff is guidance.

I think what we can say from this is about all that can be said. Don't let your kids run all over you and refrain from using too much physical discipline. Find the medium in the middle that you and your kids can tolerate and stay out of others' family affairs. There's no place for individual or governmental meddling when children are obviously loved and cared for.

Growing up in an Italian household, My older bro and I would get the belt or the wooden spoon. My brother got it more than I did but it wasn't like a beat down but enough to know they meant it.

And when my lil bro came around (that was when the school was educating the kids about child abuse) If my parent even tried to get the spoon or the belt, the first thing my lil bro said was "I have the number for child abuse hotline" It was somewhat funny, he got away with murder. LOL He is now 24 years old and we still laugh to this day.

Now that I have my own 2 lil ones...i can't bear to spank them because I would get this quilt...I know I know I am a real softie.

what I am trying to say is...we turned out alright.

Most people know the difference between discipline and child abuse. For those that don't, there's DSS.

I guess I'll just say this.....as a former teacher I've seen lots of kids whose parents spanked, whipped, etc. and many of those kids turned out absolutely horrible. I've seen kids spanked, whipped, etc. (myself and DW in this group) that turned out great.

There is much more to it than a spanking or time-out. Anyway, if you read the entire article I believe it only applied to kids under the age of 4 and that is where an over eager person could cause damage.

"Lieber said her proposal would make spanking, hitting and slapping a child under 4 years old a misdemeanor. Adults could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine."
