somebody dropping a note in the mailbox without criminal intent aren't likely to be charged with a felony.. let alone a watered down charge... lets not get to carried away using her connection to law enforcement here, wasn't necessary...

So you also have no qualms violating the law either?

as a general question to avoid being a hypocrite I would say no... seeing how I was going 1 mph over speed limit today and breaking the law.

we can use a little perspective here... would one be charged with a crime by putting a note {without ill will or criminal intent} in a neighbors mailbox. Yes or No...

Can't say how authoritative the response is, but this individual got notifications from the postmaster for putting notices about a lost dog in a mailbox

So the answer more than likely would be no charges... Good advice anyway Hughey... you are right on the law..

Guys, don't fight, please. . .the mere fact that we are all reading this thread and come back to it is because we care - on some level - about the conditions this dog is living under.

Yes, putting something inside of someones mailbox isn't legal - you can tape something to the mailbox as long as it doesn't interfere with the postman placing mail inside, or removing outgoing mail from it and you can't mess with the flag. IF you want to be all legal, slap a stamp on it and send it out and the next day they get it all fine and legal, however, someone like the owner of this dog will likely use it as toilet paper, it would be futile.

Either get a house/tarp etc and offer it

Knock on his door and offer him 25.00 for the dog ans see if he'll take it (have another 25.00 ready to negotiate with if he wants to haggle

Or dognap the pooch - which IS illegal, but I admit, I've done it. Ooooh, bad Vickie - LOL When I did, I figured if I got caught and went to court, I knew I had witnesses who would help a judge see just how bad things were for the dog and at the worst, I'd get slapped with a fine and my name would end up in the papers, thus bringing the issue of the negligence some poor animals have to suffer to light. I decided it was a win-win situation for me under the circumstances.

You could always get a camera with a zoom lens and take a photo of the dog standing off of the owners' property and send it in to the TV stations (all email addys are available online) and include info about the dogs' dilemma and see if they bite - but I doubt they will.

As far as calling commissioners, or town managers - it's honestly a lost cause. They will tell you it is up to Animal Control as it's their jurisdiction. They've heard horror stories in the past and nothing changes. There's that disgusting puppy mill sitting right in Selma breeding and selling animals year after year and yet nothing happens. Sad, but true.

As I said, sometimes you have to do what you feel in your heart is best for the victim (dog) and live with whatever happens as a result. If you can look yourself in the mirror and know you did the right thing - then that's good enough in my book.

I just hope when it's all over on Earth for me, that God has a freaking good sense of humor:)

    dog with no shelter

Good morning 4042 family. I start the day with telling everyone thank you for all your time and thinking of what I can do to help this poor dog. I am unable to do anything for the dog. My other neighbor whom seems to have a better relationship with them asked for the dog and offered some money for him. Should I say the person said that is my "dog" like they cared about him. I have tried to find the owners phone number and it is unlisted or they have only cell phones for their home.
I can only look forward to the weekend and know we have warm weather coming in. I have no faith in our sysem in JC. I really have lived in ignorance with what I thought was a system set up to protect animals.
I have never spoke to so many people in the system and to this moment not one have taken the action to rise to the aide of this dog. I know there will always be people out there that abuse animals and get away with it from puppy mills to starving animals and neglecting them. I am appalled with my neighbor. I know I have to abide by laws and not cross those lines and I will not cross them, but beleive me I do not forget. I will wait and watch and maybe someday I will get my chance to help this dog with no one knowing.I feel in my heart I have tried and it hurts to know he still stands in this cold with his fur frozen from snow and rain. I hope those with authority know he is out there and needs help and has ignored all calls for help for him can go on and maybe help others that are in need. They have let him down. I know he will die soon and he will be at peace. He is gorgeous and loving and I do not know how he can be so loving in such an awful situtation. If I see anything or hear anything about the system helping out with him I will post it. But for now I guess we have hit rock bottom. The owner, the creep will win and they know it. Thank you again everyone. I hope this dog dies soon so he find a place of peace and warmth and love from above. No one on this site let him down, I have never had so many pm's trying to figure out how to help. I love you all for your suggestions . Thank you again.

I wasn't encouraging breaking the law as I didn't realize the little postage clause. I had simply known it done with no consequence. I'm glad you let her know lest she get in trouble as a result of my advice. And too bad the guy down the road didn't know about it either when he got the note.

As for my husband he deals with the gangsters, crack heads, prostitutes etc. he hasn't run into any note criminals that I know of so he couldn't guide me on this one.

Seriously, I'm not picking a fight. I had no idea about the postage thing or I would have suggested to mail the letter. I still think it's an option for her.

    OMG!

This just reminded me of a similar situation recently around my home....only with a different animal. There was a horse (I stress the word "was") around the corner from my home that I passed every day. I noticed the horse getting slimmer. SO, I called animal control. They said they'd talk to the owners. 2 weeks pass and finally, I can see this horse's ribs and pelvis. Again, I called animal control. They told me they had several calls about the horse, had talked to the owner who informed them they could not take care of the horse anymore. So, I was glad to hear that, thinking that animal control would come take the animal and give it a better home. One week later, the horse was still there and his back was sagging....deeply. I called again, told them if they couldn't remove the horse, I'd gladly take him. (By the way, his "mess" was also protruding constantly) Animal control told me they had worked it out where the owners could keep the horse and that animal control was taking care of the animal while it was there. 3 days later, the animal died. I happened to drive by while they were digging the hole. P!$$ed me off big time. Animal Control seems to have their hands full, but when someone offers to take a case over, one would think they'd gladly jump on it.

Maybe Animal Control wouldn't have their hands full if they didn't leave these cases hanging in the air!

These stories make em so mad! not jsut b/c they are happening but also because the proper authority is doing a crappy job

Yeah, a/c sucks here. Previous neighbor was tethering his golden retriever to the back of his truck everyday - all day on the concrete drive on the very short lead. Their young kids would go over there & hit him with things & even dumped his whole water bowl all over him (& didn't refill it either). They did usually put him in the garage at night but lots of evenings left him tied out there all night. The dog escaped one day & I went out to get him, owner calls to the dog & it willingly went to him - the owner then proceeds to beat the dog in the side repeatedly. I was too stunned to say anything (and regret it to this day). Called a/c said they'd talk to the owner but had to have my name, etc. Gave it all to them, talked to owner, told me the owner said these things never happened. I started taking pix & talking with rescue groups. Next thing I see owner load dog in a metal carrier & put him in the back of the truck & leave with him about 9 pm. I called a/c again thinking he's dumped the dog or worse. Owner claims he gave dog to his dad who has a big "farm". Amazing how everybody knows someone with a farm. Even if true, where does the a/c think the owner learned his treatment of animals, most more than likely.

They finally moved a few months later.

I think it's great what you're trying to do for him. If I can do anything to help, please pm me.

stuff like this infuriates me. There is a special place in hell for the owner...karma is a real bit$@. I hope they spend eternity exactly how they have treated the poor dog or worse.

Sounds to me like all rational routes have been traveled with no results.

Also sounds to me like it's time to involve some radical folks.

I hate PETA...but what would they thing of this? And would they be willing to save a dog's life...even if it means breaking a few rules?

That horse still bothers me to this day. I felt like I could've helped him. I'm good for picking up strays. (Which my husband says is dangerous.) But there's no point in any animal having to die alone, cold and hungry. It wasn't their choice to be here and definately not their choice to be alone. I found a stray dog about 6 years ago, hungry and dirty. I had some Mc D's french fries left over in the car from my son's lunch. I opened the car door to feed him some and he jumped right in! He was a small breed. Vet said he was called a Papillion, something like that. The vet said he was a very expensive dog breed. For an entire month, I had flyers out, called neighbors, went to neighbors' homes and even called the local AM radio station to get the word out. No calls. Noone knew whose dog it was. So, I kept him. He was my house baby and I named him Buddy. Sadly, he died from old age this past Christmas, but he didn't die alone. I miss him dearly. Cases like these with the dogs and horses and cats....ugh! Makes me so mad. Some people just don't have any heart.

You did everything in your power to try and help that horse so try not to beat yourself up. It is the animal control and the owners who failed that poor horse, not you. How many people saw the poor thing every day and didn't make any calls? You'll still be blessed for what you tried to do. Animals are very lucky to have folks like you (and there are many on these boards) around who are willing to do selfless things to try and help them however they can. I wish animal control understood that people are having to mull over taking such drastic measure to help a dog.

How's the doggy doing? Any news? Were any of the rescue groups able to help? Sorry to ask so many questions but the dog has just stayed on my mind especially if these are its "golden" years and its suffering so much...
