It seems pretty simple. Having a child in this program can only help them. Not hurt them. Every little thing you can squeeze onto your child's application for college is going to help. Cleo's right. The competition is so fierce - and not just for Duke - but college in general you have to go out of your way to make sure your child stands apart more than the next child in the stack. In my opinion these days you can't start too early.

P.S. My child came home from pre-school with an "I got caught being good" sticker and I am so proud of him. To heck with the Duke program :mrgreen:

Oh yeah, well mine came home with a "I got caught picking my nose" sticker. Brag Brag. :lol:

With the Duke TIP program we are probably already speaking of the top 10 percent of a class academically, so these are kids who more than likely are going to have not only the GPA/courses to back up their claim to success, but also an academic resume that sports a list of other things like community service/volunteerism, sports, clubs, etc. I just can't imagine a university admin saying "WOW! Look at this kid...Duke University looked at the same scores we did and thought she was great too! Since Duke looked at this kids scores in fourth grade, but apparently not this other kid's I think we should admit this one." It is a crock, a way for Duke to make money off of parents that want to put the little bumper sticker on the back of their car that says Duke can read test scores of fourth graders so their kid must be a genius, unlike the children of the common people. Bragg away.

yeah, i guess it is pretty useless to have one of the top 10 universities in the US identify a kid a "talented" and help open doors for them at an early age

me thinks someone's jealous her kids didn't get picked.

Wow. This thread is turning out much different than I imagined.
Many have mentioned bragging - I would align myself with those who believe it may give a child an advantage, even if small, when it comes to college. Encourging academic growth by getting a little recognition could also go a long way. These are my main motivation for enrolling my child.
