I delivered newspapers for the N&O for 3 years. I averaged about 12 hours per week; $600 paycheck every two weeks. I usually had 218-230 weekday customers and 325 on Sundays. My route was in Garner and consisted of very sweet elderly people who tipped generously at Christmas. Yes, I had gas and wear and tear, but it was no different than if I drove in stop and go traffic to RTP everyday except my expenses were tax deductible. It was a pretty darn good job for a mom of three and allowed me to stay at home.

I would agree as the older folks are dying and not being replaced with younger readers.

My houses were close and no boxes. I did have one person in a wheelchair so I put their paper on the front porch, leaning on the door frame so it could be reached from said chair. That customer always gave me $50 at Christmas.

How many of you think you could keep, just yourself alive, nevermind a family on $218.00 per week take home. Let’s kick a min wage worker in the butt so you don’t have to pay another nickel for your Big Mac. The people who feel it’s not unjust to profit by the inner compulsion of a workers hunger amaze me. There’s heartless and then there’s callous.

Anyway, more than half the workforce requiring minimum wage guaranties are illegal’s and below the table pay. If $28 per week is going to cause your business full of illegal workers to fail without firing the people on the books, you might as well close the doors now.

Pope Leo XIII put it best in 1891.:
“Let it be granted then that as a rule, workman and employer should make free agreements and in particular should freely agree as to wages; nevertheless, there is a dictate of nature more imperious and more ancient than any bargain between man and man, that the remuneration must be enough to support the wage earner in reasonable and frugal comfort. If through necessity or the fear of a worse evil the workman accepts harder conditions because an employer or contractor will give him no better, he is the victim of force and injustice.”

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Now sit back and watch unemployment rise as a result.

Raising the min. wage is just another way for the Dumbocrats to prop up their constituents......the poor and the Unions.

Every time the minimum wage is increased, there are predictions of disastrous consequences. It doesn't happen. There may be a slight effect on employment numbers in the short run, but in the long run putting more money into the hands of people who will spend every dollar that gets into their hands can only help the economy. It's all well and good to say employers and workers should be able to decide what is a fair rate of pay, but seriously, we are not talking about parties with equal power coming to an agreement. The employer says this is what we pay, take it or leave it, and can always find somebody desperate enough to take it.

There are approx 1.7 million hourly paid employees making min wage which comes to about 2%.

So, while this may seem like a trivial number , businesses will not absorb this cost. Its not like businesses are oozing with profitability right now, particularly in the retail sector where a lot of minimum wage jobs exist.. Business will cut minimum wage jobs, or cut hours/wages/benefits on people making more than minimum, or raise prices. All of which are BAD for the economy in ANY time much less during a recession. Any gains in wages by those that are lucky enough to keep their jobs will be offset by the losses resulting from more people on unemployment/welfare. Speaking of unemployment, who do you think pays the unemployment insurance? The Easter bunny? As if folks didn't already have enough reason to not put out the "now hiring" sign.

Also, studies have shown for every 10% increase in min wage, there will be a 1% increase in unemployment. Aren't we trying to STOP unemployment? This latest hike is a 24% increase YTD and in the neighborhood of 44% the last two years. I guess when unemployment is at 11%, what is another 2-3% matter? Right libs?

More importantly, this is about driving up UNION contracts since they are a reflection of the minimum wage. Unions pay big bucks to the democrats but you won't hear a word about this being the true reason for jacking up min. wage.

In closing, this is just another lib fallacy. They get all warm and fuzzy when thinking how much they are "helping" the little guy and "sticking it" to mean ole rich business owner. I believe the saying "cutting off your nose to spite your face" applies here but the libs are too stupid to understand real world economics.

    Hey I've got an idea...

Lets adjust a baseline factor of inflation to a higher rate in order to match a falsely inflated economy.

oh, wait.... someone's already done it.. shucks, there goes my great idea....

And just think....more people laid off means less people with health insurance. And fewer people able to pay their healthcare bills. Hmmm...even more support for Obama and his push for making insurance available to everyone. Gotta have a large audience for the concert to be a success mentality. Let's increase the numbers to gain support!

Meanwhile, here in the real world, increases in the minimum wage lead to very slight short term increases in unemployment, and long term growth in the economy. Minimum wage workers almost invariably spend every last dollar that comes into their hands, increasing demand for goods and services.

...and min wage workers are the ones most affected by the backdoor taxes levied on them by democrats.
