BTW - Jean S grooms my dogs about every 8 - 10 weeks - I don't believe she's ever found a flea on them. Jean, can't wait to see you on the 10th! My mutts need to have their act cleaned up
Jean, is this "Home Defense?" My hubby gets some at Lowes for under 18.00, I think and applies it like you mentioned. . . .He sprays it once a year. . .but then again, he can be a bit lazy about the yard:roll:
Thanks, I'm going to be diligent about it! I have always hated the poison but didn't know anyone who had actually used natural methods successfully. Guess the key is to be faithful about it. Not a big deal to just add a tiny scoop to the food, though. And my dogs get glucosamine pills every day anyway; I'll just add the brewers yeast! I am very excited about this!
I did some research today and am a little confused. Help me out, please, Zookeeper! Many websites say that garlic is harmful to cats, some say both cats and dogs, and a few say its only harmful to dogs if you give them massive amounts, like 50 cloves per day. I went ahead and split a large clove between my dogs today but waited on the cats. Just need a little reassurance but I would certainly love to do this.
Onions are much more toxic than garlic for dogs and cats. Dogs can handle much more and for cats, Garlic, given in amounts like 1/8 tsp in their daily meal is NOT toxic. It can lower blood pressure and some cats with lymphoma are prescribed garlic to assist them along with their medication. IF you gave your cat cloves of garlic, and a lot of them over an extended period of time, enimia could become a problem, but to use such a small amount on cats for fleas until the problem is under control (if you don't have fleas visable on the kitty, just once or twice a week will keep them away) My kitty Nicholas, lived to be 19 1/2 - his last 5 years on garlic, , ,my present kitties now are 8 and 15 - they have been on garlic - two or three times a week for 6 years for the 8 yr old (I adopted him at the age of 2) and 10 years on the 15 yr old (we adopted her at 5) The amount in their food is negligable. Both of my kitties have regular bloodwork each year and all blood levels have been right where they are supposed to be. Info on the web can be contradictory at times when it comes to anything - especially the garlic controversy . . .all I can tell you is I know a good number of people who feed their cats garlic as part of their diet in small amounts and all have healthy kitties. If I ever knew of one who had suffered ill-effects as a direct result, or my kitties had anything funky show up in their bloodwork, I would never in a million years suggest anyone else try it.
Aunt Jeni's is one of the leading suppliers of prepared raw diet dog and cat food. Here's what they have to say about GARLIC: "Garlic: Among its many claims to fame, garlic is said to serve as a natural antibiotic/antimicrobial, boost the immune system, lower cholesterol, prevent cancer and heart disease, and make pets less attractive to pests such as fleas and ticks. Fresh garlic is best; powdered supplements are not as effective. Contrary to some information being currently circulated, garlic is not harmful to our pets. As long as it is used in moderation, the health benefits far outweigh any remote health risks. Most animal nutritionists recommend the use of fresh, raw, minced garlic for all dogs and cats. You would need to feed many pounds of garlic every day for a long time before you would create a health hazard for your pet."
The frontline you only want to put on once a month. I have never had to use bombs and thank god cause I can't use them in my house with my parrots. Sheri
Yes your right about treating the house with Parrots, you can't bomb the house, you will kill the birds. Hmmmm let me ask my parrot group what others have used for that. Sheri
Thanks Zoo, the natural treatments seem the best for us due to all the animals we have including the parrots (who are so sensitive to everything). We started both dogs on the garlic and yeast last night and will continue doing that even though the Border Collie does not seem to have any problems. As for the house, i know i overreact but i have actually only seen a few fleas and have been vacuuming the carpet religiously every day but will try the Borox first so it will not affect our other pets. As for the yard, hey Tassy, does the Sevin kill all insects, i would worried about the beneficial insects for my flowers, etc. Sorry i am so dumb on this, Gracie is the first really short haired pet and have never had the fleas be so defiant:shock:
