I'm almost afraid to say as they'll be a run on milk--LOL. Walgreens and many other places will mark their milk down the day before or day of the expiration date. You can freeze milk. Just make sure you pour a little out before you freeze it. We usually go through 1 to 2 gallons per day here. For instance, we got 10 gallons of milk last trip on Jan. 28th or around there. Still using them. We have NEVER ever had any bad milk. Plus, you can tell when milk goes bad. You all realize expiration dates are all "guidelines" right? I grew up on some overseas military bases. Shop at the commissaries over there and every single item is expired. No one thought twice as there as no other option. I know we've gotten milk reduced at Lowes Foods a couple times as well. Shop around and check the dates. They do it on half gallons too. It was odd at me at first to do it until I remembered I grew up on military bases with all expired items. And believe me, those first few gallons of milk I was sniffing away to make sure it smelled, well...normal. LOL. Just know it's worked for us, no one has ever been sick. As for fruit, reduced rack or stock up & freeze when you pick your own. Sweet potatoes are free in the fall and keep for about 8 months. Strawberries/ blueberries picked in the summer. Veggies grown at home in the spring. Trust me, when you have 9 mouths to feed (later this year, 12) you think of all kinds of ways to cut down expenses. Good luck. Stephanie--mom to 7
Oh, I grab milk when it's marked down all the time and freeze it, but I've never seen it for $1.00 a gallon anywhere. I think the cheapest I've gotten it was $1.50/gallon. You just must be finding it better than me, LOL. I don't even pour any out, just throw it right in the freezer and I've never had a problem with the jug busting. And yes, milk is often good well past it's expiration date. We go through 2 gallons a week here and it's just the 3 of us, so that rarely happens. Eggs are the same way.
Egg tip: If you're unsure if your eggs are still good place them in a bowl of water. If they float they are bad and need to be discarded. If they sink then you are good to go!
I know we're all bashing kroger here...but they had gallons of whole and 2% milk for $1.50/gallon today. Didnt look for dates since I buy 1%.
Dang, you go to the store a whole bunch don't ya? I went to the Krogers in Garner yesterday cause that mean lady that lives in my trailer-house told me to. I had a q-pon for the t-pons but not one for the croutons. I bought some eggs that had been sat upon and a can of that goo-b-gone. Had to pick up some bouillon and grabbed a thang of bon-bons and teflon. Stood in line behind some moron who thought his calculator was dead-on and said his bill should be about 61 but had enough groceries to fill a yukon. Next I went to Exxon, wait... maybe it was Chevron.. waited behind a neon for what seemed like eons with a license plate that said JUAN TON. Called the dude a pee-on, went home and got my eat-on. Anyway, guess I'll stop there. Ya'll be good
