That's the funniest thing I read all day! Mine took me down a dirt road tonight, might have been shorter, but NOT easier on the van!
What map? Use a sextant and a compass, another lost art? Get real and join the rest of us in the 21st century. A map is a tool, just like a GPS is. When I need a tool, I choose the one that works and is most efficient for the job.
And exactly how am I supposed to read a map driving down the road? Mailboxes would be in danger everywhere! :jester:
Saw mentioned in another thread about roads not showing up on the GPS Unit, just wanted to let you Garmen Users know that the 2009 Map package is now available for $69. Personally I am going to wait another year before downloading updated maps.
DH just got a Garmin last week and loves it. I haven't played with it yet but I do know it found a neighborhood that was nowhere to be found on his Caddy GPS.
Had an older Magellen, which was stolen and replaced by Magellan Maestro ~4000 - 4100 series by the insurance company. I also have one of the last pre-Maestro series for my truck (7200 maybe) that has external controls instead of all of the buttions on the screen. Both give the directions verbally including street names, and with incrimental warning steps prior to a turn. The ETA is constantly updated as is the total mileage left until the destination. The options allow for a 2-D or 3-D map, various orientation options, as well as audio warnings. The ~4000 series has a feature I really like for places that are not mapped well. If you get to a point you can define that point for any later trips withou having an address to enter. You do have to be at the location but in the country it makes it noce to be able to set for return visits. There are also several menu options for storing addresses. The features showing gas stations and restaurants is nice when travelling too. I used mine on a recent 1100 mile jaunt without one wrong turn or problem.
Just got my Garmin Nuvi 350 off E-Bay. Paid $214 brand new, came with the wall charger, car charger, case, mounting hardware for the window, and a usb cord to upload MP3's on it (like I don't have a radio or something). SIL has the Garmin 250 that doesn't TELL you what street you WILL be turning on, mine does. Helped me get around Fayetteville today! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IT!!!!! :hurray:
Garmin 2710 I have a Garmin 2710. Bought it several years ago, and love it. DH recently pimped my ride and put in back up video, front video, and headrest videos for the kiddos. That included an Alpine gps, and it just stunk. It didn't find hardly any routes at all. We sent it back. I'm sure you can find a 2710 on ebay dirt cheap.
I just received a TOM TOM ONE 3rd edition and I love it. I was able to update once for free with in 30 days of using it for the first time. It knows i get lost cuz it will tell me to turn left..then quickly says the second left!!!! My DH has a Garmin and says its the bomb(so he buys me a tom tom?? hmmmmmmmmmmmmm) Good luck in picking one
I've got a Garmin Nuvi 200. I use it everyday in my job and so far it's been decent especially for the price. If you want something more sophisicated or higher end, look into the 300 series or the Garmin Street Pilot series. Check out the big chain websites (Walmart.com, CircuitCity.com, etc) and read the reviews on different models. That might help. Mike
Tiger Direct had the TomTom One for $149, and then something about one with a $20 rebate for $129, That might have been a refurb?, not sure. BUT.. for the price, there isn't another GPS I would get. I programmed and played with the one we bought for my sister, and even though I have a Garmin Nuvi 350 that I love, I thought the TomTom One was great. It was basic, very user friendly and a really good display.
