Sure, call anytime. Weekends I'm usually running like crazy most of the day, but get breaks here and there, like now. If you leave messages on home or cell - home message will give you cell number, I'll call you back asap.

Keeping cool and calm is because the poison kills the adult worms. As they are dieing, the activity can cause them to break, become blood clots and kill the animal :(

Thank you, Cleo, for offering PLRL's services to foster.

As I said before, tho, I'm her alpha and she has imprinted on her pack. To leave me and her pack, go into a foreign environment, and have to remain penned, would cause her too much stress right now. I'll take care of her.

Got the results back. She's in Stage 2. Started her on Ascriptin last night. Next Thursday is D-day. She goes in for the shots. Then it's home and still for SIX weeks...someone told me wrong :? . It's going to be torture for her :(. However, whatever it takes to get her better!

Should I feed her in the crate, or outside in her dish (on the leash of course). Don't know which. Just trying to get everything settled. We have to pick up the crate s-o-o-n (TY, again, Ken) so she can start getting used to it before she's thrown in 'forever'.

Appreciate the update. Must be some relief just knowing exactly what you/she are up against.
She really will be fine so long as you follow your vet's instructions and restrict all activity. The limited activity really is not as hard on them as you might think. In my opinion, humans make it a much bigger deal in our minds than the restriction really is for them.
To put it in perspective, the heartworms are killers. Keeping her still for a few short weeks to have her around for many more years is a no brainer!
If you need any help at all, just post!

^^Thanks, le. I may need a little support when we get into the long weeks of her in a cage.

I just don't want her to think she's in trouble or not a part of the pack anymore. Is that silly? Do dogs really think like that?

On the way to the vet for her 3 day stay :(. We'll pick her up Saturday for her long incarceration.

Good that your vet is keeping her for some time. Better for her for sure and it gives you time to get yourself prepared.
Thanks for the update. Please keep 'em coming when you get word.
Here's to hoping all goes well!

Good luck with the heartworm treatments, Froggie! I've seen many dogs recover, from Collie Rescue ... and I know heartworms are touted as highly treatable anymore. LE is right, the trick is to keep your dog quiet and calm. The few weeks of confinement is worth the dog's life (and lifetime!).

Thanks, ya'll. I've had a friend talk with me about exactly what "calm" means in Lucy-terms...basically it means Mommie can't go near her much. She gets real excited and wants to be up my tush when we're together.

I'm still figuring out the morning routine. She needs to be taken out first thing to go potty and then fed. Then, she needs to be taken out before I leave for work. Then, home for lunch to take her out to potty. Night's are pretty well set.

Got the call, picking her up at 11:30 this morning.

Now I need to get her space all ready and smelling like her. I've been beating out her bed, so I'm gonna move it into the crate. She'll also have a chewie to come home to (that triple sale was perfect timing!).

I'll let ya know what the doc said.

    Thanks le.

She had a bout of the runs that had me scrubbing and disenfecting both cage and concrete :(, but seems to be ok now. The doc said she'd be hungry but she isn't interested in food at all. I've taken her out and she's peed every time (yea!), and she seems resigned to living in the cage.

I'm worried about the eating but I figure her tummy's still a little upset so I'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Did you wind up bringing her inside, or is she outside in the crate? If outside, the heat could definitely be affecting her appetite. Other than that, how is it going?

Thanks for the inquiry, Cleo :) . She's in a huge crate in the garage. The garage (if left closed) stays much cooler than outside. We have a fan running as well. This 90 degree weather is making me nervous, and I'm praying for a mild June, but so far so good.

She's been eating less (go figure), but is going potty on the leash-a concern of mine before. She doesn't seem to be too worried about it, so this may be easier (on us) than I thought.

I'm going home every day for lunch to take her out. That should help. Keep your fingers crossed!

Sounds like you have it all covered. Good planning ahead girl! Keep sticking to it and your weeks of "forever" will come and go just like summertime! To be sure, a mild June would be in her/your favor - heck, I could already use a break from the heat myself!

She will eat when she is hungry, do not fret over that. Good that she will GO on leash - I totally get that worry. Just great that it all goes so well, congratulations and keep up the good work!

    Well, update....

She didn't really eat breakfast so we left her bowl in the crate.

Came home for lunch and she wouldn't eat but peed. Didn't drink much.

Came home after work, no interest in food, drank a little, did her business. I plopped her down in the living room and she layed under my feet the rest of the night. She wasn't interested in anything but I noticed she wasn't truly asleep either. Her head was on the floor but her eyes were open.

    I'm worried now :(
