That's just funny. I don't know of one store in the Clayton Walmart parking lot that I like, besides Sally's. I think all the resturants in the shopping center pretty much suck along with the traffic.

If Walmart comes, then I hope 42 is expanded to keep up with all the additional traffic. I already avoid that area most of the time, because the traffic already sucks.

  2. About a year ago I remember seeing someone putting a link to either a particular DOT page or to a WRAL page saying that NC DOT wanted to redo the entire Exit 312 and make it a SPUI (Single Point Urban Interchange) but that they would first have to convert where Cornwallis crosses over I-40 into an interchange. But that DOT did not have the funds for it nor did they have it added to their long term plans.

Though it would be nice if they make Rt 42 at least a 3 lane road up to where it crosses Cornwallis.

They'll have to take into consideration that small bridge (over the creek) - the site of the proposed Wal-Mart is pretty close to it. Will the DOT be willing to widen 42 on that side of the property? It's already a mess when 'rush hour' rolls around, from 40/42 through to the light at the intersection of Cornwallis. And when there is an accident on I-40, it's wall to wall cars everywhere.
Also, there is a sign up at 42/Cornwallis, advertising for another shopping center (this was the topic of a previous thread, I think). If a shopping center goes up there, too, then we will really have a mess.

I miss the cows, the pond and the trees...

I have traveled a lot by car, all over the southeast. Many a small town was visited and many a truck stop too. Never have I seen decent restaraunts in a Wal-Mart shopping center. Maybe a run down Crapplebees or a Steak and Ale' or something, but nothing along the lines of the 'more nicer' (albeit chains) like up at White Oak. Case in point: How many 'more nicer' establishments went in at the Walmart in Clayton? Not one, aside from Zaxby's (still fast food) and The Japanese Steak house but ther are across the highway.

In my experience Best Buy's, Targets and other upscale bix box retailers are what attracts the restaraunts. This is helped by an attractive shopping center. Come to think of it, I have never seen a WalMart in a semi attractive shopping center.

Build it or not, the projected completion date on the plans were 2010. To far away to speculate anything right now. Same goes for the shopping center at Cornwallis. Called the first part of January to see if I could bid the job and they told me the plans won't be ready till November, if that. So their looking at 2010 also.

For all of you that think you know what's going on with Walmart, ride down Cleveland Crossing Drive to the very end. They are already clearing the land, however, they are clearing it from the back to the front :) Oh well for your idea dgsatman!

AS Far as those 'more nicer' restaurant....no. I don't think so. I don't even think the ones at White Oak are all that. I do like the peanuts on the floor place but that is not my idea of a 'more nice' upscale restaurant.

    thank for the new motto:

From what I remember they are widening from Cleveland Crossing Drive (Lowes) to just before the little bridge. So basically, creating a new bottleneck, and adding at least 10,000 cars a day, and if you don't think that is true, you live in a different country. The only thing Wal-mart is going to bring is more congestion, crappy fast food places, and a dollar store. The only part of that we need is....wait we don't need any of that, it is all available within a 15 minute drive! I was at the meeting where they presented the wal-mart to the planning board, and the engineer stated that most of the traffic would be coming from I-40 and the western part of NC 42. Isn't that nice, they are making no improvements on that side, and you are going to see the traffic back up off the ramp onto I-40, and gridlock on NC 42 during peak hours. Wait, we already have that! I for one hope they never build it.

They backed out in SE Raleigh after they bought the land. I'll still only believe it after they open the doors! :)

I love Walmart (ok, so shoot me!) and would love a dollar store (yeah, yeah, I know!)...but I do agree 100% that there is a HUGE traffic problem already, and it's only going to get worse. I really hope this is taken care of in the correct manner.

You can already see some development along 42.

Definition of an idiot: One who would spend an hour a day tied up in traffic to avoid a 15 minute trip to Clayton twice a month.

  19. I went to Lowes home improvement today. Before I went in I took a ride behind it and went past Ashley Turners offices to the end. I saw heavy equipment sitting there. It looks like they are building a road back there that parallels 42 east. Talk about sneaking in through the back door :)
