An alternate detour is to go west on 42a mile or so and then south on Mt Pleasant Rd and around and back up 50. If/when Jackson King is reopened, you can go straight at the closure, to Mt Pleasant Rd and then around as well.

DOT said they might reopen NC42 around 5:30 today.

Jackson King was reopened late yesterday so you can go south at the closure, instead of north. Lot faster.

Has DOT said why its closed still? Bridge/road integrity is my guess, but why so long for an inspection if they are reopening it (meaning no damage found).

They said they didn't do an inspection yet.

So I went by yesterday long enough to get a good look. Part of the bank washed out. They had a digger and some trucks putting dirt down. This was about 4 yesterday. No idea if they did reopen at 530.

I went by at lunch today, they had a major construction operation going on. So my guess is they are completely either rebuilding part of the bridge or the road there. Be a few days is my guess.
