Stephanie, I don't know much about UNC's dental school for orthodontics, but just wanted to contribute that I work with a woman from Chapel Hill whose daughter was lucky enough to get into the program. It's saved them a real bundle and she's getting first-rate orthodontic care, but she says the downside is that you have to go to the appointments they give you, you don't really have much say in what days/times you'd like to go. I don't know firsthand how true that is, but that's what she told me. Best of luck.

I'd be very hesitant to have my dentist...no matter how good a dentist he is...do it if he were not an ortho or didn't have an ortho (that I/my kids saw) on staff. There's a reason for the specialty.

My braces were $1,600 back in the day...that was a lot then. Good to know there's an ortho close by!

I wish they were still $1,600...my daughters braces were a little over $5,000!

I should have read Ro's post about the dental school before putting my .02 in. She knows far more than I do. Good luck!

Well at least now I know it is not just her. They cemented a bracket to the back of the top two teeth, but she is self conscious because it is black??? You really cant see it, but she keeps saying for all the trouble of her hyrax and braces and retainers she wants to 'be done'. I will tell her to give that dream up. :)

I was afraid to ask the cost but she has a series of these plastic pieces that are rotated out every two weeks with each successive pair forcing her teeth to the alignment needed. Each new pair hurts for a day or two then it does not bother her.

Depending on how bad you have it you will have a shorter or longer series of inserts.

Thats all right...they were like that at the beginning. They do certain things on certain days and once you become a patient there...it should be easy to get an appointment....atleast I didn't have any problems (not yet...LOL)
