I believe it is the Banner Elk Cafe in Banner Elk which has the patio. The food was great there and the patio is soooo nice for a meal. Breakfast there is not bad. There was also a riding stable not far where you could ride some mountain trails. The tstable was kind of out in the boonies, but felt like home to me.

There is the Smoketree Lodge near our place there. The folks who have stayed there tell us it is nothingfancy but a good palce to stay. Kitchettes and the same view of theback of Grandfather mountain we love. There are also reports of bears and mountain lions in the area if you go hiking.

My kids loved the caves as well. We went this past spring during Easter break. We really had a great time. We also did the 4 hour train ride. There is also the road to no end hiking trail down from the train station. The kids really liked that hike as well and it was FREE.

Make sure you visit the Valle Crucis Community Park! It is down a path beside the Mast Store Annex (off Broadstone Road). There's a playground, small pond, paved trails, picnic areas, and the Watauga River runs through the back of the park. There are also bathrooms there. We stay in cabins in Valle Crucis when we visit (logcabinrentals.com) and we never, ever miss a visit to the park. For lunch, the Ham Shoppe is great. It is at the corner of 105 and Broadstone Rd. where you turn to go to Valle Crucis. Only get 1/2 sandwich unless you're really hungry!! :) Have fun...wish I was going!!:)

We just got back last night from Boone and had a great time. It was just an overnight trip so we did not have time to do all we wanted. We went to Linville Caverns, Grandfather Mountain, Mast General Store and Grandfather Gem Mine. We stayed at Valle Crucis Bed and Breakfast. We ate at Bayou on Main St in Banner Elk. Loved it all. The B&B has 2 suites for families that are themed western - we stayed in the Sherrif's Office. Their breakfast was to die for.

I always wondered about that place. If we do shoot up for just one night and don't get a cabin, we stay at the Baird House B&B on Watauga River Road. Tom and Deede are great hosts and the breakfast there is awesome too!! :)

Bump...what is the cheapest time of year to go where you can get a good deal on hotel/motel rates in the Boone area?

We usually go through www.vrbo.com and have found some great rates on some really nice places. On the home page, you'll need to click on NC, then on the map of NC, click on Blue Ridge Mountain area and on the next page, it'll list all the different areas.
