Former Johnston County School Superintendent Dr. Anthony Parker is in the news once again. Parker retired from the Johnston County School System in 2009. He then accepted a job as Superintendent of the Berkeley County School District in South Carolina. On January 11, 2011, Dr. Parker announced he would retire from Berkeley County Schools effective June 30, 2011. Three days later, Jan 14, Dr. Parker resigned, effective immediately, during a special board meeting. Even though Dr. Parker quit earlier than expected, he will still receive his full salary through the end of the school year on June 30, 2011. Parker’s annual salary is $195,000.

Some South Carolina newspaper reports indicate Dr. Parker will receive a $121,000 lump sum payment in exchange for his departure, raising the question if he actually resigned, or if the payment was part of a severance package. Parker’s original contract was to go through June 30, 2012. However, in April 2010, the school board extended his contract through June 2014. The settlement package also includes an agreement that neither Dr. Parker nor the school board can make negative remarks about one another.

While in Johnston County, Dr. Parker announced plans in December 2008 to retire on June 1, 2009, but left prematurely in March 1, 2009. In Johnston County, his annual salary was $241,395. Parker told a South Carolina newspaper he was retiring to spend more time with his family, the same statement he made when he left Johnston County Schools two years ago.

At the Jan. 14, board meeting, the school board met in closed session with Dr. Parker. Some of his supporters believe one or more members of the Berkeley County School Board attempted to micro-manage Dr. Parker’s work. One board member declined to comment on the sudden departure, saying he was under order not to make any statements at the request of the school board attorney.

Former Johnston County Schools Associate Superintendent Dr. Ann Williams resigned from Johnston County Schools in 2009 only to accept a job three months later with Dr. Parker in South Carolina as a construction consultant. In June 2010, Williams left the school system to spend time assisting with the care of her parents.

Looks like SC got smart quicker than we did by getting rid of these two.
