There really is so many different places in this area, I can't imagine that you can't find another place that meets your needs as well as your child.

The program at Polenta is a Head Start program and it is licensed by the CDC that is why it is on the website. The afterschool program is a different program and is operated by the school district and is not licensed.

true, not licensed but run by the school, which means its teachers and teachers aids that already work at the school that are watching the kids.

The reason for the age thing (age 4), is they have to be about to start Kindergarten.

    State Inspection

Well, it seems all of our fears have been confirmed by the state. The came and reviewed the center and gave it a 1 star rating. My child will be gone by the end of next week.

How do you know the center only received one star?

    Last straw...

I am assuming that the state finally came today....my child wasn't there today, but I can tell you this much: 1 star + current concerns/problems= last straw. My child will not be there after next week. I will be finding her somewhere to go as quickly as possible, preferably by the end of next week. I am so disgusted with this rating. How could something that started out soooo good turn so bad: and in LESS THAN A YEAR. I just am so disheartened by the downward spiral. I hope that they are able to correct the problems, but I am not going to stick around to find out. Anyone know how the director handled telling everyone?

    Proof of Rating

I just googled daycare licensing in nc. I found the following state website:
http://ncchildcaresearch.dhhs.state.nc.us and did a search for Open Arms. They are indeed a lovely 1 star center. How grand is that. Just thought I'd share the site so anyone else who is going to locate a new center can use this site to see the ratings of potential new centers.

    One Star Rating

The director hasn't told anybody yet. The star rating is hanging on the board by her office and I just happened to see it when I left.

Figures--I am used to her not informing everyone of the important things like finally having the rating...wether it be good or bad.

I know some have said that Riverwood CDC is good...they only have a 1 star as well...anyone know why I should even consider them if their rating is just as low? I don't want to end up in the same situation as with Open Arms....

My DS went to Toddler's Inn in Clayton. He's not been there in a couple years since I went to work part-time instead of full time. We had a good experience there as I posted earlier in this thread. I checked that site and it was and is a 3 star facility. The building may not be the newest in town, but it was very clean and the teachers were awesome. Kiddo was always neat and clean when I picked him up too. Don't know why, but I can't stand to see a grubby child unless they are actually outside playing in the dirt!

I don't have a child at Open Arms, but I have been following this thread. I have attended the State Childcare Licensing Workshops for my job. A one star center does not necessarily mean it is a bad place.

Here is what the star rating system means (taken from ncchildcare.net):

Parents can use the Division's Facility Search Site to find information about the standards a child care facility meets. Licensed child care facilities now have ratings of one through five stars. One star means the facility meets minimum licensing requirements. A two - five star rating means the facility has voluntarily met higher program standards, higher staff education levels, and a better history of compliance with state regulations. Parents can see exactly how the facility scored in each of these areas.

Also, check out this link. There is plenty of good information about the star system here:
    http://ncchildcare.dhhs.state.nc.us/parents/pr_sn2_ov_sr.asp

Their last sanitation inspection was on June 5th where they received a Superior rating of 233/235.

I know finding quality childcare is difficult. I hope you all find the best situation for your family.

I think you should always ask a few questions, who is CPR/First aid certified, who has SIDS training and what there star rating is. Just so you know. I dont think centers are required to tell you, just have the sign hung up so that it is accesible. And yes Riverwood is 1 star and I think it has to do more with Staff education. To get the higher stars all your lead teachers need to have a 2 year degree and all assist teachers need to have credentials and 12 training hours a year, sids every 3 years, cpr every year. Good luck in finding a child care center, and just know there is not a perfect center out there..

My daughter is in the summer camp and the before and after program at Riverwood CDC. I have been told that they should be getting a higher rating soon, all the paperwork has been turned in to the state.

For some reason I thought River Wood had already been a 5 or 4 star program?

Guys...are you sure Open Arms just got their formal evaluation? I am pretty sure they were already rated a 1 star and were waiting for a new evaluation to determine what the new rating will be. They have already sent out notices to parents stating that their rates are going up in September...based on a 4 star rating that they believe they will get from the state. I think the 1 star license you saw hanging up is from right after they first opened. Most centers receive 1 star in the beginning and go from there. Did you notice a date on the 1 star license?

LJN - I think you are right. According to the website the 1 star was in Jan and that is the star they get when they first open!

I think you are right, I think they lost it because of education when they had a big turnover last year or something like that.
