This debate has gotten too deep for me  but I'll add my two cents anyway. Clif, just because Christians did thus and so, doesn't make blowing people up acceptable. I don't think Christianity today is defined by violence the way Islam is. If it were then it would also need to be addressed. Right now, the major focus should be on Islam, and I don't see how diverting attention to Christian history helps us today. And please don't throw up Eric Rudolf as a legitimate comparison to al-qaeda. Fighting Camel, Of course Christains believe the only way to salvation is through Christ ...hence the word "Christianity". Were you expecting Buddah? The difference is Christianity has matured beyond the point of mass executions such as flying planes into buildings. Religions that still attempt to function this way have no place in our world and need to be ended NOW. I also believe that anyone attempting to convert you to Christianity through terrorism should be killed.
I didn't say it was. Islam is defined as violent only by those who don't understand it, or those who would use it as a means to their own evil ends. As long as people say that Islam is a violent religion and Christianity is a peaceful religion, I will point out the error of that belief. Why not? Both do horrible things in the name of their religion and are doing those things against the teachings of their respective religions. That fact that you, or other Christians, are uncomfortable with the comparison doesn't make that comparison any less valid.
Josey Wales wrote: Nope, I have no problem with some Christians believing that the only way to salvation is through Christ. What I was merely pointing out was those who were implying that they didn't. Hence, the links to the Southern Baptists and Free Will Baptist. But at the same time, we need to be careful in painting all Muslims as "extremists" because some in their religion believes you're going to hell because you don't believe as they do, when the same can be said about some Christians. And some Christians do believe that salvation can be obtained through Buddha.
Oops Clif...I was in a hurry to get to an appointment..(do have to do a little work now and then). Should have read "Some CHRISTIANS do believe that salvation can be obtained through Buddha". (I can't recall any particular Christian denomination that has a blanket belief that believers of other faiths will be saved on judgement day). Many Christians, who go to church regularly, have told me over the years though that they believe people of other faiths who were raised in different cultures would obtain salvation, even if they never had the chance to accept Jesus (Among those faiths, UCC, Universalists, Methodists, Presbyterians. and Catholics) Just because those members of various faith have told me that however, does not make it a part of the official statement of faith. I apologize for the confusion.
"Nope, I have no problem with some Christians believing that...." Therefore, Christianity as a whole is bad? That's the crux of my problem with your position. Let's apply equal standards to Islam! I'll repeat my question: Name one leader of a major Christian denomination who backed and applauded an event such as 9/11.
And just for shits and grins... Did you see Jews in Israel celebrating in the streets when that same Hezbollah woman was displayed night after night by AP and Reuters when her house had been blown up by Israel night after night?
Fighting Camel wrote: Oy Yayoy wrote: Oy, where did I say that Christianity as a whole was bad??? Equal standards for Christianity and Islam is what I'm advocating!! If someone thinks Islam is "extreme" because they believe you're going to hell because you don't believe their way, then Christianity is just as extreme for believing others go to hell for not believing in Jesus. That's about as equal as you can get on that one.
Still Bashing The Pope... LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) - About 1,000 Muslim clerics and religious scholars meeting Thursday in eastern Pakistan demanded the removal of Pope Benedict XVI for making what they called "insulting remarks" against Islam. Benedict "should be removed from his position immediately for encouraging war and fanning hostility between various faiths" and "making insulting remarks" against Islam, said a joint statement issued by the clerics and scholars **There must not be much going on over there in the Sand World if this is all they have to do.
Wow! That link is very instructive! It describes exactly how certain people handle disagreements on this board, even though the disagreements in question may be about politics or religion and not about racism.
