Was curious...I assume he has ear canals.....ever heard of the baha. Its a similar procedure as the cochlear implant.
Out of surgery Quick follow-up. Surgery went well. Device is implanted. Recovery was very tough. Nurse didn't believe me at first when I said he should sound that way. Went into a severe asthma attack and boy did those docs move! Really impressive. About 7 of them around the bed. He had just gotten into recovery and I was there when it happened. Other than that, non-eventful thank God. Right now, he's drugged so will be out for awhile. Hardest part is no playing at all for 2 weeks! How do I keep him down?! Yikes. Thanks for praying and thinking about him. Got to go. Making a pumpkin pie for one of my other kids' classes this evening. STephanie--mom to 7
thanks so much for the update. I will continue to pray for that precious child and your family.
Thanks for taking the time to update us, I know how hectic things must be. Have been thinking about you and your family all day ... if there's anything you need, please dont hesitate to ask your '4042 family'!!!
I'm sure all of us will be thinking of you during the next few days and weeks as you're finding out just how well it all will go for him. What a wonderful thing for him to be able to hear. Glad the initial surgery went well!
Wonderful! So glad things went well for the little fella (and you too, I know how nerve wracking that can be). Just think, he'll hear his first Christmas carols, ho-ho-ho, toys with sounds....what an exciting time for you all!:grouphug:
If it's anything like other cochlea implants ... he won't be able to "hear" anything until his activation date. Then it sounds different than what you & I here. But still what an awesome thing. Amazing what technology can do now a days. (correct me if I'm wrong .. cause I could be mistaken)
Yep, she knows her stuff. His activation date is Dec. 9th. The technology we have is the latest so totally different then just even a few months ago! In a few years, CI folks will actually be able to "hear" better than you and I. The technology is unreal. Now, once he's turned on, it will take awhile for his brain to reprocess what sound really is and how to turn it to words. It is still sketchy if he'll ever be verbal at this point given his late start and some other factors. But we are extremely hopeful as he is so dog gone smart. He lip reads well already. It will actually take him years to learn how to speak. Just hearing would be a blessing though. All the sounds, especially at Christmas time...I can hardly wait!!! Trying to decide whether or not to keep the other hearing aid off once the CI is on. His disorder is complicated (AN--auditory neuropathy) so lots of decisions have to be made. He just hears chaos and static now with his hearing aids. Makes NO difference whatsoever whether they are on or off. Never even tells the teacher when their dead as it doesn't matter to him. Hence, why the CI is the way to go. Much more complicated then that but trying to shorten it. He just had another dose of some pain meds so that's why I'm typing--LOL. Think I'll have to do another neb treatment tonight. His breathing is starting to get asthmatic again. Wish me luck....going to be a L-O-N-G night I have a feeling. No sleep for mom, I'm sure. Have a great night. Got to get the other kids ready for school tomorrow.
I may take you up on that! Write or call me tomorrow when I'm more coherent. Got to run. One of them has coffee...why, I have NO idea. Urghh.
