16 year old make up a very high driving death rate statistic. There is a reason for the 9pm driving cutoff. There is not a curfew for how late the child stays out without driving. But don't let your child become a driving statistic after 9pm.

I understand where you are coming from, but the time of day isn't all that goes into these tragedies. There was just a wreck in Nash Co. with 4 teenagers heading to some sports activity in the late afternoon. Doing 80 mph. Doesn't much matter what time of day if they are going to drive like idiots.

I can see where you might get this, but it's not that at all. I'm simply trying to find out if it's legal for her to follow me home at 9:30 instead of 9:00. There are exceptions for a reason and I am looking for clarification on a law. I appreciate your comments, but there is no need for that angle.I can promise you that my parenting should not be brought in to question here.

  4. Sounds to me like you are a very good parent. You are trying to do what is right and instill the same in your children.

That is my intent, thanks. I wasn't trying to avoid the law by any means.
Thanks for your input on this. If you hadn't said something she would have been driving home tonight thinking it was OK when it wasn't.

All too true, I hope your child has a safe fun school year. I know it is exhausting as a parent to have to be at work and everywhere for children at the same time, it is crazy. I have done it, and don't know how I did it, but I am glad we got thru it. Best wishes on a wonderful school year.

The worst for me so far (and I have two more years of this) is the 6:45AM football practices in the summer with two small children in tow. I am not a morning person.

I am. As long as no one talks to me. I hate morning meetings. I have my public Outlook calendar at work blocked out from 8-10 every morning so that no one will schedule me for early meetings.

To your point, it's amazing how much running we have to do. I'm glad my kids are involved but man its tiring. She didn't drive home last night. I had a friend ride out there with me and we took her car home for her. Then she rode home with her mother later.

It's alot of driving, waiting, and coordinating of other appts, activities, plus we have to eat sometime!

You realize quickly how limited the choices are for places to get decent food in a hurry.

I am staying strong, I still cook at home. We eat early or late and bring snacks.

That's not an option on most weekdays for me. I leave here at 7:00 for work, then do all the running leaving directly after work. Most of that takes place too far from here for us to be able to come back here in between. Split parentship adds to the difficulty.

    Oh - plus I can't cook.

I understand. I am fortunate to be home with my kids and provide 95% of their care.

Even once they have a full privilege license, it's hard to know just how much freedom to give them. My youngest (17) doesn't understand why I don't want her driving past 11pm. I just tell her that it's not so much her driving I worry about but the other drivers. And even though she has been driving now for 2 years (if you include her permit) she is still inexperienced in my book and could react impulsively if put in a bad situation. By that I mean by overcorrecting her vehicle which is the leading cause of teen accidents. I also won't let her go to the beach with a friend driving who is what I consider a new driver. And I consider anyone with less than 5 years driving experience more of a risk. I'm just not going to put my baby in a car going 75mph sustained on an interstate with crazy drivers for 2 hours. She doesn't understand but I'd rather have her anger and still have her here than the alternative.
