I always wonder about the person that died at, say 87 y/o and the picture is from their high school yearbook or WWII GI days.

My grandmother made me promise NOT to put a 60++ year old pic of her in her Obit.

BTW- the photo business just became the norm a few years ago in the N&O, it was the norm ages back everywhere else.

That's a great link. Appreciate that.

I checked it with my father-in-law's Dec. 13th passing down in New Hanover Co.

And also pay for! A lot of people don't realize that an obit is basically a paid "advertisement", of that person's life, charged by the column-inch, just like a display ad, although the rate may be different. The little "one-liner" under the county or town name is free, by the write-ups cost, often hundreds of dollars for the lenghthier ones.

My theory on the young looking pictures: It used to be much more common for people to "sit" for a photograph or portrait, particularly of just themselves. As these people get older, and maybe move from public (or business) life to retirement ,they tend not to be photographed as much. Nowdays the only decent photo a family may have of an older loved one is from years ago.

Wow! The time has flown by since the last post on my thread!

I'm still reading the obits and enjoying it just as much!

And, I'm still telling myself, "I would have loved to have known this person."

Are there any new "converts" who've joined the club? :)
