That is what I say.. but when you google it says 1 cause there is no ( ) around the 40x0... but basic rule of math is to times first.. Isn't that correct? Google says both 1 and 41.... it's all over facebook... with both answers. lol But I say 41

If it is 40 divided by 40 times 0 plus 1 it equales 1 My eyes are bad but that is the way I see it!

Multiplication and division first working left to right.

    40 + 40 = 80 x 0 = 0 + 1 = 1

Exactly - multiplication and division first if there are no parentheses.

    40 + 40 x 0 + 1 ---> 40 + 0 + 1 ---> 41

If you put it in the calculater exactly as it's written, then hit equal, it's 41.

If you put it in as 40+40, then hit equal, it's obviously 80. Then 80X0= 0. 0+1 =1

Order of operations ... perform whatever is in parenthesis first, then any exponents... multiply integers next, then division, addition and subtraction.

You'd multiply 40 x 0 first, then add the rest.

Multiply/divide (left to right) then add/subtract (left to right)
In other words, if both multiplication and division are in the problem, after parentheses and exponents have been dealt with, you would work left to right, whichever comes first, finally, you would add or subtract, working left to right. In this problem it is not an issue.

    The answer is 41.

If you hit = after entering 40+40, you are inserting parentheses into the problem when there are none present. This is how the calculator interprets it.

I completely forgot about My Dear Aunt Sally

    M-Multiply
    D-Divide
    A-Addition
    S-Subtraction

41 based on a slide from the course I teach

    Order of Operation
    Work from the inside out
    Do squares first
Do multiplication and division before addition and subtraction (My Dear Aunt Sally)
Do everything under the square root before hitting the square root key

No change in the rules. You just had a bad teacher. It happens.

PEMDAS or "Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally", parentheses first, then exponents, then mult/div left to right (Whichever comes first) and then add/sub left to right (whichever comes first). Believe me.

I just thought this would be something to see what everyone thought... When you google it you get both answers.. 1 & 41

I believe it's 41 myself cause of MDAS. But that's just me.

Guess we will never know the true answer cause we will always think the other is wrong :)

I was simply explaining how folks arrived at 1. Please note I never said which one I thought it was, although 41 was what I came up with in my head prior to digging out the calculator. School was a long time ago. 8)
