Virburnum and hollies. We purchased some hollies (can't recall the specific name) from Broadwells last fall. They are about 10 feet and were $60. We have planted A LOT of trees over the last few years. I know you are suppose to plant in the fall however the ones we planted in the spring have done much better than those planted in fall. We've had to replace many fall plantings but I cannt recall any spring ones.
Line up the kids at the edge of your property? The only prerequisite they don't meet is "disease resistant". Other than that, a bunch of kids fits the bill quite nicely based on your list!
English Holly http://images.google.com/images?q=e....mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1 the security part tickled me!
If you go with Holly, they attract draw bees and wasps. In the Spring you will have to wash them down. The females and males are both bad for this. In addition, the leaves are prickly and are sometimes difficult to prune. Arborvitaes are good if they will be in an area that gets afternoon shade. They don't like the afternoon sun. A Thuja Green is very tough and disease resistant. They grow 3-5' per year. http://www.fast-growing-trees.com/ThujaGiant.htm Leyland Cypress is an option, but if they get top heavy from wind or rain they can and will split down the middle. http://www.fast-growing-trees.com/LeylandCypress.htm
Thuja Green Giant grows fast and is disease resistant and deer resistant. Also, Cryptomeria gets tall and makes a nice screen. After Hurricane Fran, many leyland cypress blew over because the root system isn't very strong.
Bamboo is good also Do some searches on Google for clumping bamboo. I just planted some this spring so it is still young. There is a nursery on Sauls Road you can order some from.
Thanks for that ncmom. Very interesting. I'd always heard that you should plant in the fall as well. however, I'm not wanting to wait that long so I'm trying to plant this spring. Your comments make me feel better about doing so.
Okay, I think I'm liking the Thuja Green Giant best so far. But WOW! I need so many. If I order them from Fastgrowingtrees.com I'm looking at $600 and up. They Do state that theirs are 1-2 year rootings so they would probably take off farter. Hoping I can get some input on local nurseries with maybe a better price and where I would not need to pay shipping. I'll need somewhere from 30-50 trees I expect/ That's if I plant them 5' apart. I guess that would be enough. So...what nursery do you all suggest?
HAPPY DAY! I am SO happy. I found some Thujas for a great price. They are shipping out today. YAH! Grow babies, GROW! Thanks for all of the advice folks. I think the Thujas will be just right for us.
LMAO!!! I just read this today!!!:lol: You're so bad Cleo...and I love it!!!:hurray::hurray:
someone told me of Red tipped ...something or other that is pretty and grows fast.... Anyone know what is could be? (keep it clean)
