How about free (or at least low cost) interesting things to do for those of us without children? any suggestions? I have been to the natural history museum, Yates Mill, and the free concert in Clayton town square. But am looking for other suggestions.

Has anyone tried the Milbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh? A friend of mine takes her 1 year old there... She said they have a wading pool for babies, olympic sized indoor pool, kiddie park, and are building a lazy river.

Well, I'd love to join you all this summer on some things as well, but my schedule is kind of iffy, like last years was. I'm *tentatively* working every Tuesday and Thursday, and possibly Fridays if I need to...Wednesdays I'm planning on taking boys to movies if there's one in Garner they like, if not, maybe the park or bowling or something else.

I've been to Noah's Ark before with my son's preschool, it was pretty cool. According to the website they're only open by appointments, is that right? So do we need a group to go?

Melynda - I am SURE we'll bump into you this summer, the way you've been stalking me!!! :jester:

That's me ... the 40/42 stalker :) Hopefully we'll get to stalk you guys at the movies sometimes :)

My 10yr old son is also hoping to try his hand at tennis this summer. He's never played before (and neither has his Mom) ... but he bought a couple of rackets at a yardsale recently and he's dying to try them out. If any of you are heading to the park and have a little one who'd like to give tennis a try ... please give me a holler. As I mentioned before, my son has never played before, so I can't guarantee the other child won't be chasing a ball around the court ... but hopefully the kids will still have a little fun.

I was just cleaning out my son's book bag and cam across a "2009 Summer Skate Pass" for Interskate where he can go skating on Tuesdays & Thursdays for Free. I'm sure we will be using this pass often. If anyone has a spare pass they don't plan to use, please let me know. I'd love to be able to take a couple of his buddies along sometime.

Last year we received passes for Free summer bowling that were handed out at school. Did anyone get any of those this year? I didn't see anything like that in my son's bookbag this year.

Ahh, summer activities and planning. We go the old fashioned approach of L-A-Z-Y summer days. Okay, here is what we're doing w/ 7 kids of varying ages. 2 hours of school each day at home...I'm the teacher. 1 hour of individual work and 1 hour of group work. I asked the kids what they want to learn about & wrote it all down. One week we're leaning about birds, doing some birdwatching and then building birdhouses/ feeders. Another week, natural disasters and making volcanoes/ tornadoes and such. Another week dinosaurs and building dinosaurs and such. We have 2 trampolines, swingset, outdoor equipment and a pool. They always invite their friends over. 1 child is going to an amputee camp in the mountains. All are going to grandma's for a few days each, one at a time. The girls will each do a dance camp for one month. We're goign to do some at home crafts as well. All of us will desperately be increasing our ASL. We may take a day trip to the beach here and there. We'll see. We have an adoption reunion this month as well. I'm sure my parents will visit some time this summer. A couple times in the summer we have a movie theater day at home. Rent new movies & invite lots of friends over. Darken the house completely, have popcorn in the special containers like the theater does, and soda( a rarity in this house). They always have a bunch of fun. Occasionally, we may do a camp out but the bugs are really horrible this year so doubt it. Point is, we take it as it comes and keep it really, really simple. Relaxing and no over planning of activities. Haven't heard a complaint yet so I gues we're doing alright. I'd love todo the Noah's Ark thing again if anyone is going. Early morning b/c it is hot now. In July/ August, I'll be sure to post a pool get together here. Have a great summer everyone.

QUESTION. About the free movies... From what I understand they play both movies Tues-Thurs at 10am. Is that correct? I want to take my kiddos to see Alvin & The Chipmunks (they love that movie!), but want to make sure we go at the right time! Also, do they typically fill up quickly?

Yes - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays at 10 am. They will play both movies on all 3 days, if it's a popular movie like that they will usually have 2 theaters open. It does fill up quickly cause all the daycares, summer camps, etc take busloads there, I'd suggest getting there about 9:45 (maybe earlier if you want snacks/drinks) in case there's a line. I can't remember, do they charge $1/each for popcorn and drinks, or is it more?

Yes that is correct. We went for the first time today, got there around 9:30, and there were lots of people, but I didn't think it was bad. The movie was showing in two theaters also, which was nice.

According to the White Oak theater, they show one movie on Tuesday and another on Thursday. Maybe we are talking about two different theaters?
We paid regular price for a small popcorn and a medium drink. I noticed they have 'meal deals' advertised but no prices for them. Also the employees could use some customer service training. They all just stand there watching other employees take customer orders, meanwhile there is a line. They don't speak up and say, "I can take you over here". That was the only negative thing.

I just went to the website to check and sure enough it says Tuesdays and Wednesdays, yet the dates of the movies for the theater at White Oak are all Tuesdays and Thursdays. Confusing!

Well now I'm confused! LOL When I called the White Oak theatre their message said their children's movies are playing Tues thru Thursday... Are they not? I guess I can try calling their contact number... thought I'd ask here first though!

I haven't been this year, but went a lot last year and they showed both movies all 3 days...

My former Colorado neighbor's children came to stay with me for a couple of weeks. They arrived last night. My son is in heaven. In any case ... the Colorado kids don't get to see the beach much. I just found out that our swim lessons for tomorrow have been cancelled ... so it looks like a great day to head for the beach. What is the best beach to go on a day trip to so the kids can play in the surf & sand? Anyone else planning a beach trip this week? I wish I could carpool with a few of the 4042ers ... but I'm driving the truck because my van is being used by someone else and I only have seating for myself & the 4 kids. Any beach suggestions would be appreciated :)

We always go to Wrightsville for a day trip to the beach, just cause it's so close. There's one spot there we always park and there's a public bathroom right there by the parking lot and beach, which makes it great when you've got kids. Sorry, I don't know much about the beach to tell you where it is. I do know to take quarters/change for meters. Hubby didn't when they went a couple weeks ago and he had to pay $20 for a parking lot space. And we know about the meters too, just wasn't thinking that day to bring any change...

Why must they confuse us so? LOL I think you are correct if that's what their recording says. That is odd that their site says one thing and recording another, but hey, I don't care as long as when I get there, there is a dang movie playing! LOL

This is from their website: Selected G & PG movies start at 10AM each Tuesday and Wednesday during the festival. First-come, first-served seating is limited to theatre capacity. The Free Family Film Festival is safe, lots of fun and a great way for kids to spend a weekday morning in the summer.

Now here is the schedule on the SAME page:
    White Oak Stadium 14
    1205 Timber Drive East
    Garner ,NC 27529
    919-779-7499
06/16/2009-06/18/2009 The Tale Of Despereaux (G)
    Alvin And The Chipmunks (PG)
    06/23/2009-06/25/2009 Charlotte's Web (G)
    Surf's Up (PG)
    06/30/2009-07/02/2009 Horton Hears A Who (G)
Journey To The Center Of The Earth (PG)
    07/07/2009-07/09/2009 Space Chimps (G)
    Star Wars: Clone Wars (PG)
07/14/2009-07/16/2009 Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Veggie Tale Movie (G)
    Spiderwick Chronicles (PG)
    07/21/2009-07/23/2009 Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (G)
    Nim's Island (PG)
    07/28/2009-07/30/2009 Everyone's Hero (G)
Madagascar 2: Escape To Africa (PG)
    08/04/2009-08/06/2009 Mr. Bean's Holiday (G)
    Kung Fu Panda (PG)
08/11/2009-08/13/2009 Kit Kittredge: American Girl (G)
    Shrek The Third (PG)

So it looks like they are Tuesday THROUGH Thursday according to the schedule. Perhaps the blurb at the top just omitted Thursdays in error.

I think you are right. It seems there is a miscommunication between the local theater and their corporate offices. The local theater says all three days, yet the 'commercials' they showed before the movie say Tuesday and Wednesdays. LOL

Last year both Garner theaters offered it, and the older theater had it just T/W, while White Oak had it T/W/Th. I didn't see the older one on the website this year, so think it's just White Oak. I'm surprised, they both seemed packed whenever we went.
