Just another victim of big media. Most daily newspapers and many semi-weekly newspapers are being bought up by the big media companies and then they proceed to try to run the smaller newspapers out of business. Smithfield is owned by McClatchy obviously, but Garner and its sister papers are all owned by Heartland, which is another big media company. The Clayton News-Star, I think, is locally owned however. The trend towards giant media just gives a clear indicator to where America is going. Take for instance what you see in the "new" Herald. Most of the design is coming from India. The sales are coming from the N&O office in downtown Raleigh. There's nothing "Johnston County" about it other than trying to make money off of Johnstonians. I bet the Herald's staff is only a third of what it was just 3 years ago and I'm sure its only a matter of time before they'll be out of their building downtown and in a much smaller leased building. The Herald now looks nothing more than a N&O clone, using the same templates used for all their other papers. Much of this big media stuff is because of laws that have removed limitations on how many TV stations, radio stations and newspapers one company can own. I would hope people will see what's going on and start focusing on the locally owned papers. They are what's best for American democracy. I think what needs to take place is an association formed on a state/national level to give local owned papers more strength in numbers against the giant media corporations. If not, America will get its news from only 4-5 different corporate media giants.
BTW, I read of the "India" ad and page design thing in the Princeton newspaper while stopping at the Hardee's for breakfast a few weeks ago.
We received 2 Herald's today. One inside our N&O and one individually wrapped in the driveway. Cut down some more trees!!!
